Upon The High Horizon

Many years as I was small I watched him there,
while sitting on the porch railing as the sun sat.
He always was part of the sunset a gold hue about him was shared,
and I imagined him being a statue in fact .

Years went by and he never failed,
on being there for me.
Then one day I didn't see him,
and I jumped for papa was in need.

I saddled my pinto and took off in a run,
for it wasn't long to have the golden hue of the sun.
As I topped the ridge there he was with hat in hand ,
and I knelt and cried for the golden man.

After the services I would stroll out on the porch to see ,
I would look to the ridge each day as though he were there indeed.
I knew in my heart and my mind his soul rides so proud,
forever loving the land as I do now.

I brought up an old oak and commenced to chop away,
through my vision of him it began to take shape.
I brought another stump up to fashion his horse so lean,
and while I worked on this my mind was at peace it seemed.

I sanded and varnished and made the details just right ,
I worked on it day and night .
My son was to be born within a few months,
and I planed on Papa on the ridge to guide us with love.

The day I placed the statue up on top of the ridge high ,
tears fell that hadn't fell from my tired eyes.
I knew he was in heaven and today he could see,
that little boy that use to watch him will now my son will be .

On his second birthday the two of us went out and on the railing I placed him there,
and as he looked about he became oh so aware.
He twisted and commenced to stand and I held him tight ,
and he was in awe of the man surrounded by the gold hue that very night.

Daddy look at that man do you know who that is,
he has a big horse and wears a hat just like this.
I wear my hat like that daddy do we know him he asked,
and yes tears fell from my eyes for he saw my son at last.

Yes son many years ago I was right there just as you are today,
and my grandpa was always on the ridge at sunset looking all golden that way .
He turned and asked his pa will he be coming down,
and I said no I'm afraid not my son for I'm sure he is heaven bound .

Author notes

A warm narrative remanice. I can see with in my minds eye the old work worn hands of a gentle man as he holds tightly the reins of powerful mare and that twinkle in the eyes of a man that know more about you than you know about yourself..

I enjoyed the story. Sad but uplifting....

    I love country music.

    Tearful

This poem is so full of emotion and such a heart warming piece. After my brother died i would always remember the way he used to go from one room to another without any of us noticing and sometimes if i hear a niose in another room i think it is him.

    This piece was amazing
