The way I read this:
The young one makes his way through struggles as a 'right of passage' towards maturity regarding his temperament and outlook.
New inspiration guides him to widths not limited by his particular upbringing. He benefits from his father's guidance and knowledge to then go further on.
The Grandfather for me, represents ancient and enduring laws which will always remain and point to verified and established wisdom.
