Free... to have a dream

Missing image

I remember looking in the distance
across the mired of barricades and wire, and "The Wall"
Everything a dull gray everywhere I looked, a total absence of color

Seeing people walk around
almost in a depressed stupor, heads down
Not even daring to talk to their neighbors in public, for who may see

The citizens of this city
lived with the state, always upon them
One knock at the door, and you could be taken away

They say, if you may marry
where you will work, and if you will play, what you may buy

Nothing mattered but the life of the State, the master of the toiling masses

That was East Berlin in 1968
before the power of freedom, tore down the wall
We made that happen, because we exists in the world, as a model for all to see

The dreams of the ancient philosophers
and the founders of our blessed land, all believed
in the value of the private citizen... the rights of the individual

I wish all Americans could see
or feel for a brief time, the life of oppression
To live without choises, without hopes or dreams, as so many do

Then you would know personally
and hold our flag, as high as your arms would reach
You would give thanks each day, that you were born on American soil

Free to live your life

to come and go as you please
Free...  to have a dream

Lee

Author notes

So many waste their freedom
I think because it has always been theirs to waste
We take for granted what so many others, will do anything to achieve

Some pray each and every night, that they can come to America
I can not tell you how many times I have heard this, when I was overseas
If there is anything better in the world, I have not seen it to the East or West

This was very moving. I wasn't born in "68" I was born a year later, but I do remember vividly when " The Wall" was torn down. My favorite line was " We made it happen, because we exists in the world, as model for all to see.

    Superb

A most excellent write indeed. With all of its faults, democracy is still the best form of government. I pray that we'll always have freedom in this country. Again, very well written.

This sheds a light on the way I think of the US. But there are still things here that make me think that maybe, just maybe it is a bit better someplace else. I guess tis true when they say, "the grass is always greener on the other side". We live and learn and I am still young so maybe I have not got it all figured out quite yet. Anyhow, great write. Good luck in the contest.

      Hi Krys

I have thought for a while
      before I answered your question
I realy believe you are wondering
is there more, somewhere beyound our home we know

I think it is all in where, "you are"
What your personal experance, and bond is to this country is
even your social and material status, or needs

      For example:

Sweeden has great healthcare and social benifits
      but they pay 60% taxes

Only one country can have Mount Everest, or the Pirmids
      if that matters

Some small off-shore countries have zero taxes
so if you are rich, you may want to be their citizen

Germany is clean, and Italy is like the History Chanel

      But none are America
with her size beauty and deversity
and like so many citicens of the world feel about thrir land

Not hold the city where I walked as a child
or carry the memories of my existance on this globe
and only one displayes the flag that I served

      When I could travel anywhere
I loved seeing soneone elces treasured nation
and it was inlightning to see
      but I always wanted Home

Thank you for carring for my words
Go look for your self someday
      Go travel and see

      Our grass is Bright Green

      Hi Novy

      You have that right
      we are truly unique

Our revolution from England, was the begining of the end
of Colional domination and cause the fall directly, of many
      European Monarcies

One need only look at the Constutional Demoracies astlablished since WWII to see our impact
first and formost, is Japan and the countries of Eurpope

We totally concured the Empire of Japan
and when we were done, we did not take their lands as others do,
we astablished a tempoary goverment under Mac Arther
and let their citizens and leaders designe
the system of goverment they choose.
We did the same in the Genive Accords in Europe

The point is, we surrendered their county back to them
and financed their recovery into the modern world
I am saying this in great summary, yet I say again

What other nation would do this, give back concered land

That is the America, I believe in

This is why it is so important
that we have some key knowledge, of our history
not to know the names and dated so much
but to know the things we can be proud of

      Thank you for reading me

I agree with you and have state this...let them lose their freedoms to spew their hatred for America and see how fast they would hold up their flags and defend AMerica whom they took for granted so many times... I believe everyone has the right to their own views but it has gone too far and too much hatred is regurgitating from the mouths of those who abuse that very fredom. Well stated and well written Thanks for your entry and the best of luck in my contest!!!~~Toni~~

      Dear Toni

There is little perfection in the world
      Not in nations or instutions.
Yet there are a mulitude of great people, doing small things
each day, that make our country better

I know I am blessed to live here
Where elce can we work hard, and reach our dreams
      and live in realtive peace.

Hi Rick. Great, inspiring story to remind us just how priveleged we are, especially right now, with so many of us concerned and frustrated with the direction we are heading, still at war, gas prices effecting almost everything we do, it makes living a challange for so many. But we are blessed to live here, to be free.
I could see your story so well, great images in the beginning. Thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts.
    love,

      Hi Michelle

I have watched three ecconomic cycles since the seventies
Some were a party, and everyone was fat and happy that worked
and on the down side, we all wroung our hands and waited for a change

The thing I always think of is...
a bad day in America, is still better than a good day almost anywere elce.

We don`t live, three generations in a small room
and the possibility of doing better, is always present
      for the truly ambishious

Thank you for liking my story
Looking across at Check Point Charly, was unforgetable
and made a perminate impression in my mind

Now I want to see, how many of the winers Vote
That is the talke of the tape for me

Tell them loud and tell them now America needs to hear this.. I walk in these stores and get sick to my stomach I will tell people why are you buying the products from a communist country? and now we America are in bed with China and every country in trade Communist it makes me sick our drugs will all be produced in China most are now people need to wake up you have left a calling card with this. Fifty eight thousand boys gave up there lives for nothing... in Vietnam and so many more died at home so we could trade with them now it makes me angry and it makes me sad I gave up so much for this.

      I know about the 58,000
That is a sad forgotten story

I believe there are many ways to govern people
I prefure thoes that allow the most personel freedom
Most now believe Socializem is a failed experement
and the dictators are falling by the numbers.

We need to behave our selves and govern well and faithfully
and show the true potential of dermoceracy
      over the next fifty years.

      Then we will see clearly
a high tide raises all ships, and the world with us

This is very interesting, a lot insight is just a few lines. You saw "The Wall"? That's a 'Nam reference, right? I never would have guessed, you look so young! Wow!

Thank you for serving. My Ex went to Desert Storm. When he got back he was a gung-ho Army-first, wife-second jerk. I'm sorry, I got distracted.

He became an alcoholic after he got out, so I began to shut him out. I'm thinking that maybe I need to get some of these things out of me! LOL I'm sorry, I'm rambling on and on and it's your page.

The land of the free, and the home of the brave.

So many of us take that song for granted. The other day I was talking to some teens that couldn't even tell me how many stars were on the American Flag..Here in our own country. Like you I have friends from other countries, wishing and praying to come to America. They have all the answers, how many stripes are on our flag and 50 stars. They even know the pledge of alligence! Sad, how many have fought and died for our freedoms we take for granted. How many times does the consitution have to be remade into law?? I guess for some fighting at home in law, is better than seeing the reality of war, real war and what goes on. They would rather wear blinders...than face their own ineptness!

Sorry Rick for rambling! Great write...~Sie
