Once, things were predictable
Everyone stopped to say hello,
Went to church on Sunday
Gossiped and eyeballed outsiders.
In small towns people stop and say hello.
Identity bond by tradition
(Gossiping and eyeballing outsiders)
Guns solving problems
Immigrants bypass traditions
Palabras added to drawling lexicon
Guns used to solve these problems,
But the “colored” water fountains are gone
Mexican mixing marriages
Replacing homogenous, we used to look the same.
Time snacking on paper bag segregation;
History changing, different battles.
Intermarrying sanctified bloodlines
Small numbers divided among themselves
History changing, same battles
Americans contra foreigners
Stucco houses filling, silly to
Gossip and eyeball outsiders
Who outnumber the old way;
Once, things were predictable.
Author notes
This is an oldie; I wrote this for a chapbook for poetry class junior year.
