The Dumbing of America

This writting may seam a little conceded, but I must adress a sirius issue.

These days, almost no body checks there spelling.
Hardly anyone cares if their using propper grammer or sentence structure.
People with college degrees talk like idiot’s.

“So, I was, like, at work yesterday and like totally flipped out on this one guy...”

Where did you learn to speak like that?
Do you honestly expect anyone to take u seriously?
Check you’re work.
...you know, like they taught you in elementary school.
There was a reason for that.

This was so, so painful in that I'm 18 -- a junior at an American university -- and so many people at my class level are several years my senior. They STILL cannot communicate like human beings, and you don't even want to know how many papers by twenty-year-olds I've had to correct. Many of them contain all the errors you've showed. Pitiful, really.

Oh, sod it, 99.9999% of humans are talentless, worthless pieces of shit.

Like others have said, there's definitely an underlying problem. America loves its ignorance, it seems.

Horrible write (I mean that in a good way; "you're grammer" made me cringe, thus proving your point), and great message.

It's more than just poor language skills

and math, as cliche points out. It seems the ability (and willingness) to apply logic, to reason, is on the verge of becoming a dead art.

Too many people are willing to allow others to think for them. Too many are willing to accept the pronouncements of so-called "experts" without questioning the underlying rationale the experts use to arrive at a conclusion. It is a symptom, I believe, of a much deeper problem.

Great write. Like Socrates, be proud of being a gadfly on the backside of humanity. Without gadflies, society is liable to weaken and crumble under the weight of of its own laziness and ineptitude.

I agree with the sentiment, and as a math tutor, would like to add that this isn't just a problem with writing. On the other side I feel that the poetry in this piece was sacrificed for the rant.

    A little dissapointed,..

though there is still a point to what you are saying. It can be proof of poor education. Still I think grammar, right now, should be one of our lesser concerns. The title had me revved up to hear something about the nature of American daily lives, i guess something greater. Perhaps the fact that the average citizen watches hours a day of television/you tube; and, en masse, their reading amounts to a gossip mag/beauty mag or sports section. Perhaps the fact that we can't seem to hear the actual words politicians are saying. That we think we actually have a choice between an anti-war and pro-war candidate. That we think 2 choices is real democracy, to begin with. I'd love to see this suped up in that way and beyond. : )

By the way, before i realized that you were intentfully misspelling, i was cracking up laughing because right before you started off the rant-strewn poem you spelled serious as you did. I've seen people go off on people for spelling and do that without intent, always did amuse me. Take care.

    I Agree As Well

But in poetry we can fudge a little on grammar and even spelling - yet I would say you are right - our education system has failed in many ways - Bless God - Joe ------------------------------------------------- hagd

Crikey - I could see ALL of them. I cannot tell you how painful this was to read; I think my eyes may be bleeding.

    Old.

The idea is getting tiring, the constant pointing out of america's "dumbing down".The loss of the ability to spell is universal. The tone of voice stinks of arrogance and unneccesary pride.
The last line, however, is an excellent touch, and jolts a reader VERY nicely, which is impressive.

. . . yes, I agree. But it's not just America that getting dumber, it's the entire Western world. But what I really dislike is how people deliberately misspell words, especially with chat-room-esque abbreviations.

  • you didn't say EVERYONE does it, but you did say "hardly anyone" and "almost nobody" does it, so take it easy on Shannanagan, foo.
  • Ah, this is somewhat true. Not everyone, but so many people do act like this. Some just do not care or maybe they just think it's normal now because so many people around them do the same thing.

And then again Shannan, perhaps some people are just idiots.
    • I never said that EVERYONE did it. Did you even read what I wrote? You basically just spat back at me everything that I had already said. Thanks, Einstein. We love you.

      Not.

So glad it was part of the piece!

You are so right. I might be wrong, but I think that texting may have affected this phenomenon too. I read random blogs and occasionally find something interesting. However, so many blogs are written in a shorthand that I just can't abide or be bothered to decipher. I'm glad I kept reading.

    • Text messaging can add to it, if we let it. Sadly, most people do let it. I, for one, don't use chatspeak in text messages unless I have no more space left [the 160 character limit] and don't feel like sending two separate messages. But otherwise, never. And I have a few friends who do it online ... I've asked them not to cause it's a pain in the ass to read, and they just won't fucking quit. LAY-ZEEE!!!!
