Super Heroes to the rescue

Super heroes to the rescue

What then was fiction once when I was small,
it seems has now become a well known fact.
Buck Rogers saved us when he heard the call
to come and fight as other worlds attacked.

He flew through space in rocket ships to fight
with laser guns and weapons never known
before, but now they’re always in our sight
and now our future plans are still unknown.

The Super Heroes from our past must come.
Why haven’t they appeared to save the day?
Buck Rogers, Superman, to name just some
we need them now and fast without delay.

With Superman our man of steel to aid,
one breath would blow pollution right away.
His mark upon the earth would soon be made
for all the world to know he’s here to stay.

He’d mend the ozone layer too I’m sure
between them all ‘twould be an easy task.
Get rid of deadly weapons! Stop the war!
For supermen it’s not too much to ask.

Look back in time and see our comic strips:
Dick Tracey with his talking watch, now true
with mobile phones that run on micro chips.
Who thought that they’d be used by me and you?

So, Superman and all you trusty men!
Please come to earth and help to save mankind;
clean up the world and make it green again.
Let all the mess be gone and peace be signed!

They all will leave their footprints in the sand
when heroes stand upon our precious land.

Author notes

Number 4
Cell phones in Australia are called Mobile phones:
Some of you may not know Buck Rogers. He was a comic and serial hero back in the 1940's, each Saturday morning we would go to the picture excited about what adventures he'd have each week. Whoever invented him must have been given a look into the future because everything became a reality when space age arrived.

Dear AJ, We certainly do need some heroes to come along and help us, like Maureen said we need heroes with brains to save us. A great poem dear Aunt.

    Dear Joan,

I enjoyed your poem about the Super heroes of our past. I think we need new Super heroes, though, to solve the problems we're facing in the 21st Century. Yem said we need some Super-Hero-Brainiacs and I think he's right. We don't need brawn, we need brains...a genius or two would do nicely! Scientists, Researchers and Inventors may be our new Super Heroes come to save the day! They may not look like Super Heroes but looks can be deceiving anyway. They may not be dashing and daring but they are persistent and caring. After all, the future of their children and grandchildren is at stake, too!

It's interesting that what was once only true in the comic book writers' imaginations is now taken for granted, e.g., "Dick Tracey with his talking watch, now true with mobile phones that run on micro chips."

Best of Luck in this contest!

    Love,
    Maureen

    Author's Comments fascinating, too.

So True... That so many fictional writers' stories, like Buck Rogers, we later find were more prophetic than fiction. A sneak peek glance into the reality of the future.

I really enjoyed this. I'm an avid comic book enthusiast, so I got all of the references, and also liked how this tied back into the state of things in the world at the moment.

Good to read your stuff again :-)

G'day Chris. Good to hear from you and see you back on AP.
Yeah, the comics were great as were the serials every week.
It would be great to see them become a reality and stop all this devastation.

I've seen bits and pieces of the old Buck Rogers serials...wasn't Buster Crabbe, Buck Rogers? No, that was Flash Gordon.

Well Buck, Flash, Batman, The Green Hornet, et al with their high powered gadgets and machinery would be ridiculed for their large carbon footprints and would have to walk to wherever crime was occurring. Superman with his all-natural flight would be in vogue and would get all the "Greenie Hippie girls"...poor Lois.

But it's a serious plea you bring up, we developed too fast and without thought to how it might effect the environment, and ourselves. Ever notice how there were no super-hero brainiacs, (maybe Batman) we need one now.

Awwwww Yem, if they were all here they'd soon get our world back to being the way it was before all the devastaion that has occured.
too far back for me to remember who Buck Rogers was, I might look it up. We sure do need a lot of help now!
      SUPER HEROES WHERE ARE YOU?

    Dear AJ,
Being not old enough to see them at the movies I do know of them from my parents.
It would be great if they appeared now when we need them to save our world and make it green again.

    Dear Bea,

WOW!! Just imagine a squad of our childhood Super-Heroes:
Buck Rogers, Captain Marvel, Flash Gordon, Super Sleuth,
Dick Tracy, Superman and Wonder Woman, Tarzan and Jane,
The Phantom, Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood and all the other goodies fighting to overcome the evils of the 21st century!!
They would quickly sort out the gangs, triads, drug-peddlers, terrorists, boy-racers, bullies, child molesters, vandals, bag-snatchers, kidnappers, corrupt politicians and racketeers! Burglars and car thieves would be put out of business overnight but I hope they'd leave the pirates alone 'coz I'd miss those stories about Long John Silver, Hawkeye, Captain Blood and other tales of the blue water that I loved as a boy.....
Thanks for this reminder of so many of the heroes (and baddies) of my formative years which set me on my path as a romantic and a dreamer.
Applause and best of luck in the voting,
Love and hugs, XXX Hugh (R.)

Buck Rogers wasn't my favorite hero but I sure do remember him. He saved the day many times. Now it's hard to tell the hero's from the villans sometimes.

You've reminded us of those days when the world was not polutted with waste and all was pure... Oh for the good old days. And yeah, I guess that makes us old as dirt like Darlene said.

Best of luck in the contest

I know what you mean Dee, every week they always left us with a cliffhanger wondering how he was gonna get out of the situation he was in and he always did. And out of You, Darlene and me I'm the oldest! But yes, they were good days.

Hold on a minute, Joan!!! I'll be 71 next month... I figured I'd be the oldest
When I was very young and into the comic books, (in the days when they only cost 10 cents) my favorite hero was Blackhawk. I was so naive I thought he and his group really existed and even wrote them a letter telling then that when I got old enough I wanted to go work with them on their island. I think I was about 10 years old at the time. But you know what, those buggers never even answered my letter

I can remember laying in the hammock in front of my grandparents country house and reading those comics hour after hour. The hammock was an old fashioned one (by todays standards) strung between two tall pine trees... oh for the good old days.

Na Na Na Na Na Na Na I will be 73 in September, so out of the 3 I AM the oldest!! My brother's were into the hero comics. I loved Mickey Mouse and used to sit at the table for hours sketching the front page and colouring it in with my paints.

If our thoughts turn to be real!

Sweet Angelica, Fantasy is muchmore sweeter than the real. The real has limitations, but a fantasy is what we want it to be. In love, a fantasy is a must for all and every one. Love remains fresh thro' fantasies, you know! Nice write dear Angel.

  • Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could call on the "Super Heros" of the past...I certainly do remember Buck Rogers...does that make me old as dirt...This is a fun piece with some hope in it for a solution to our problems...thanks for entering and good luck...
