My Country Tis Of Thee (Silver Trophy)

On the battle field the soldier sings;
My country 'tis of thee
America is my home, I will fight to keep it free.

So many of us have gone to war
We fight our battles on a foreign shore.
Leaving our loved ones home to pray
as the enemy we do not know we try to slay.

In the government the politicians spout;
My country 'tis of thee
You should feel privileged to live in this land we made free

Many of our best in the wars have been lost
but we know to be free we must pay the cost.
Freedom to speak our minds or carry a gun
Are some of the freedoms we have won.

On the home front the family sighs;
My country 'tis of thee
America I love you, this land of the free

Our young and old have given their best
by making freedom ring as their quest.
So on this fourth day of July
I will honor our patriots who had to die.

For my country 'tis of thee
Sweet land of liberty
Of thee I sing

    How sad that after all these years of supposed civilization, we still revert to the most base manner to solve our disputes. If only we could get it through our noodle that solving our issues with force just perpetuates more violence. We do not learn.

    I join you in honoring those caught in a situation not of their making, and to those who lose their lives in the name of oil, extremism and arrogance. They are heroes, even if the war is a fraud.

    When is the last time anyone mentioned Gandhi? A long time...we make heroes of stoned starlets with no panties on in this country...

    You may have your soapbox back now. I was getting a nose bleed way up there.

    • Hey Yem,

      Glad you made it over to read my entry...I will listen to you any time you want to get on the soap box...there is room for all of us...and I have lots of kleenex for the nose bleeds so no problem there...

      We need to do a contest around Gandhi and his teachings...what a great bunch of poetry that would bring up..maybe cause a little bit of the grey matter to forment good ideas.

    A wonderful well written poem. I love this country and hatee our poor leadership. I feel for all our soldiers it is shameful what has been done for these men so brave.

    • Thank you kind sir..seems we both have the same feelings for our poor leadership...We have done so many shameful things and I hope we can make amends for them before our time is gone...Too many brave souls have been lost to too may futile battles...God Bless the USA...
  • WOW

    this poem was amazing. it is hard to find patriots in this country anymore and you are one.
    • I think we have a lot of patriots but as is often said...we are the silent majority...it is time to stand up and be counted...Thanks for reading and commenting...

    I have to agree with Queen that freedom is never free, too much blood shed. You've done an excellent job expressing your thoughts

    • Thanks for reading and commenting...If but all of mankind could live free...
  • As usual you capture the spirit of the time.
    A very moving piece.
    The price of freedom has never been so visibilly described.
    Thank you so much for your entry and good luck in the contest.
    ED.
    • Thank you for reading my poem. I cry when the flag goes by in a parade, when I see the memorials to the wars and when the band plays the national anthem. I can't bring myself to watch the news hour when they list the fallen heros of the present day war...

      Wars are so sensless but it seems they are necessary to keep us free so God bless the ones who do it and thank you to all of them...one and all! Darlene

    So many seem to fail to comprehend that freedom has its price... one that is worth paying but often at the cost of many lives. This is an excellent poem, Sis You always write something that is well worth reading and this is an exceptionally good example.

    Good job and thanks for a wonderful poem and best of luck in the contest

    Love and
    Dee
