Cowardace?
Or prudence?
They say that love is for the brave
Yet I find my own heart barred.
I say it's rather for the fools
With hasty actions, and quickly scarred.
To love takes risk, it is well-known
But for many, the risk outweighs reward
So before that gauntlet I make my own
I want assurance that she's worth the sword
Because its blade is double-edged
And is a hazard greater than nigh all other.
I'll keep my heart and sweet nothings hedged
Until these "nothings" mean and cover
My future love with exuberant bliss
And ecstasy envelopes every kiss.
Until I sicken from time apart
And she's driven mad for want of me,
I'll continue to guard my heart
Even unto eternity.
It's not that I'm afraid to love...
I just don't think you're worth it.
Author notes
This is a response to the 15th option, the Gandhi quote about love and cowardice. The most loving among us are gluttons for punishment; because that love is rarely returned, and nearly never to the same degree that it was given.
