The Night Before She Left

She must have known,
She was going to miss him,
The night before she left.

The night of that joyous celebration,
All of the fireworks brightening our eyes.

A drunken night,
She spent with him,
And all of us.
A merry-go-round, and baby swings,
Jumping off,
And running into things.
Disco dancers,
And black cats,
Roman candles,
And black jack.

Few knew,
But I was one of them,
She would leave him the next day,
It was obvious to everyone,
She would never stay.

Floating back,
To the husband before him.
Seeing her other son.
Just like that.
She told no one.

How he must feel,
To be alone,
And just with his step-son,
A boy of fifteen,
A handsome young man.

Streamers,
Blew in the breeze,
Red white and blue,
Along with the flag,
That they put up for you,
America.

But if he had known,
She would leave him again,
What would he have thought,
What would he have said?

America,
On your birthday,
It was the eve,
Of the end of her stay.
