Batiste and Widor

Batiste and Widor on the console--
Gentle melodies haunt
Like restless shades at midnight
In a condominium of
Plastic, glass, and steel.

Electronic flutes and diapasons
Stride from note to note,
Martial, military almost.

But on the parlor organ
The melodies unfold, enflesh,
Parody discorporation, and spirits
Resurrect to speak in voices
Full of wonder and of joy.

Author notes

On playing the organ music of Edouard Batiste and Charles Marie Widor, first on an electronic organ at my church, then on a hundred-plus-year-old reed organ in my home. The difference between electronic simulations of sounds and the organic breath of air moving across reeds. Interesting.

    Very nice ...

and very nicely done. The differences do seem to stand out. One wonders what would happen if the last two were recorded and all three were played together at the same time.

    Ah ...

atmospheric, reflective, auditive ... I simply loved the exit line: Full of wonder and of joy. The music resounded in my soul.

    Thank you.

    Blessed be, Poet.

  • You didn't need the authors notes.

You, with this poem have achieved all that the poet may wish to accomplish, namely to show rather than tell. Your evocative yet precise description is worth a thousand pictures and at least two CDs. Well done indeed. Return the favor?

  • Powerful and fun.

the pipe organ is significantly better sounding than electronic... The reed organ must be miles ahead.
I would have liked to hear more about either the reed organ or the music itself.

    I love the 'condominium' simile

    Nice poem
