round the old oak tree…”
Mine is on the porch post
But just as plain to see.
Within it’s loops and streamers tied
the memory of those who died,
the hopes of those who will return,
whose families on Faith rely.
It’s tied beside a flag
that wasn’t there before
and every time I enter,
as I come and as I go,
I’ll say a prayer for all the guys
who make my freedom so;
by giving of their very breath
so mine can sleep in peace
and thank the Lord for who they are
their lives to give new lease.
With sharp salute to LTC
look forward to the day
when he for whom I put it there
be safely home with me.
For my friend LTC RTB, Afghanistan/Iraq
Author notes
I wrote the original last summer when my friend was supposed to leave for Afghanistan, he is a 61 yr. old University professor/ Lt. Col. in the Army who was re-called and long story short found out he had Cancer during his physical last summer. He came home, treated the cancer, and was re-assigned to Iraq. He left about a week ago for a year's tour of duty. This is in tribute not only to Bob, but to all the 'Seniors' who have been recalled and left comfortable careers, incomes and lives to serve our country.

awww beautifully crafted sentiments and prayer, the vocab is exxcellent and it just floats the love in hope against all doubt and fear of the war folly, touching an extra depth with the notes too well penned dear poet,

Thank you for this tribute Patsy, to the brave men and women in our armed forses - especially the ones that are up in age. I join your salute this Independence Day weekend.

a good tribute for a friend
I admire the men and women who answer duty to protect
lives and freedoms, even for those not 'their own'. Regardless of any stand on the wars, the soldiers deserve our utmost respect. To go twice is remarkable.
My dad was a Canadian WW2 vet; he saw too much, I think.
