Dying within Autumn Winds

Dying within Autumn Winds
Written October 26, 2004

Brisk air fills my lungs, like shards of ice
leaving a pain much like the one of my heart
as the coolness of your tombstone
braces my back against the autumn winds

Upon the barren earth, ancient trees bleed
multi-colored leaves of life's essence withering
as though they were memories of our life
flowing to join in the dance of the dead

Though denial still fills my weary mind
part of me wishes to meld within them
and be whisked beyond the loneliness
into the hibernation of winter to come

I will your spirit to reach for me in comfort
as the sun breaks the clouds in defiance
striving to warm me against the bitter chill
though too late to save me from life's frost

For my soul, much like the gray of the stones
lacks the luster of the hues nature displays
for it wishes only for this body to wilt and die
releasing it once again, to soar away with you
