Away up north, where ice and snow, are stirred by chillin' gale,
there, where the northern lights are shinin', folks all tell a tale,
They say there is a spirit rangin' in those frozen reaches,
of barren ice, and stormy skies, and fearsome banshee screeches.
They say it is the cryin' of the Empress of the North
she's callin' to her children wantin' them all to come forth,
the snowy fox, the polar bear, the wolf and caribou,
the Arctic tern, the spotted seal, the elusive ermine too.
Come out and greet your mother, for she's lonely, she will cry,
and every creature of the north will soon be comin' by.
They'll come to give her praises, and to seek her blessings there,
for she is the Empress of the North, they all are in her care.
Now, some say it's just legend, just folk lore and fantasy,
but others say, don't be surprised, if some dark night you see,
in whirlin' mists out on the snow, a figure far away.
You'll be witnessin' the Empress callin' her children out to play.
Author notes
And, this story is true, because a wise old Eskimo told me!
