Tree-son

“My cherished cherry tree who has struck down ?
Its leafy limbs which once caressed the sky
upon the lawn now lie ! ”
An angry father’s firm face flushed with frown.
Then, hatchet hand, came Washington’s reply:
“I cannot tell a lie !
‘Twas I, unworthy, axed its taxed trunk brown.”

Sunk in thought, his sire seemed to descry
an invitation from on high: -

“So shall you cut your country from the Crown !
The colonies shall stretch their wings and fly, -
the time draws surely nigh !

Artist Leslie Barker painted the illustration using an architectural drawing based on information generated from archaeological excavation, historical records and standing 18th-century houses in the region. • Ok; this is an interesting take on your inspiration . A few things:

I don't like all the exclamation marks; I felt like my vision is spotting with them there are so many lol. This was ok, I think if it had been expanded some it would have been stronger. I like that you separate the voices with different colored font. G'luck !

Thanks for including the link to the article; I knew the story seemed familiar from an American history class I'd taken, but I'm not American or much interested in its post-1700 history, so I often forget. I was also wondering about the colour used, but duh: flag colours. Very effective now that I've remembered, lol.

I liked your diction, and the rhyme worked well, here; the first line did feel awkward because of trying to shove "down" at the end, but otherwise, good rhyming.

Ta for the entry & good luck!
