I want to live in Coober Pedy
in a hole dug in the ground
Where the rooms a cool and quiet
And you never hear a sound
How's that for keeping good relations
with the neighbours you can't see
because the only way you'll meet them
Is if you build a tunnel in between
If you need another lounge or bedroom
you can just break out the dynamite
and you can sleep any time
because you can't tell if day or night
Cooper Pedy is a mining town
Beautiful opals adorn the halls
But I'm sure I can learn to live with
Opals throughout my household walls
You're probably wondering why
(Or perhaps you're really not)
Why they all live underneath the ground
Its because its so damn hot!!
In summer it can get to fifty five
And thats centigrade you know
Thats one hundred and thirty one
For you countries that are slow
So you can kind of understand
Why they dig down where its cool
And don't be fooled about the luxury
Some of them even have a pool
But the best thing about Coober Pedy
Is when it's your time to breath no more
No one even has to bury you
They just go out and shut the door
in a hole dug in the ground
Where the rooms a cool and quiet
And you never hear a sound
How's that for keeping good relations
with the neighbours you can't see
because the only way you'll meet them
Is if you build a tunnel in between
If you need another lounge or bedroom
you can just break out the dynamite
and you can sleep any time
because you can't tell if day or night
Cooper Pedy is a mining town
Beautiful opals adorn the halls

THIS MADE ME SMILE!!!!!
I am sitting here smiling to myself. This is lovely as I have often thought of living underground as here it is becoming so hot and humid in the summer and the winters are lately milder. Actually some here do live in hillsides with three sides of their home underground and the forth is open.

LOL... Bex, I didn't know there was such a place, and now I'm going to have to visit the link you were so good to leave. The poem is a delight, and I think Coober Pedy would suit some folks just fine! Your sense of humor is wonderful. ~K

I've heard of underground dwellings but this takes it to a whole new level. As usual, you described it vividly and with your usual panache. The only stanza where the rhyme scheme broke down was this one -
Cooper Pedy is a mining town
There's opals but not much more
But I'm sure I can learn to live with
Opals throughout my household walls
The 2nd and 4th lines don't rhyme, as they do in the other verses. How about . . .
Cooper Pedy is a mining town
Beautiful opals adorn the halls
But I'm sure I can learn to live with
Opals throughout my household walls
I like the ending about shutting the door, and that would probably be why I wouldn't want to live in one of these places. It's too much like a grave and I like the sunlight way too much. A place with A/C and a window is fine for me on 120 degree days.

Thanks Mark!! I have taken up your suggestion. I did have trouble with that verse! I think most of the houses have big skylights in the roof that allow in lots of light but not much heat. My wonderful parents in law were just there and sent me a postcard, which inspired my poem. Samantha and I have planned a road trip to take at some point to go there, 2000km's over the Nullabor!!

This is a wonderful poem. I first heard of Coober Pedy about 30 years ago. I read about it in a magazine article. I remember reading of the opal mines. To this day, when I buy an opal, I think of Coober Pedy.
The rhyme and flow of the poem was very good. The only place that it seemed to break down was the fourth stanza.
Overall the poem was a great read. Thank you very much for sharing.

Kinky man!
A kooky kinky funny poem. I saw a show on TV about a place like this one time and I for one wouldn't like to live there, but more power to ya!
Interesting write with nice rhyme and flow!

Great!
I've never been there myself but have friends who lived there, and owned an opal mine - doesn't that sound like fun! - and will visit there one day. Your sweet poem showed the place off to advantage; I clicked on it because of the name, and I'm glad I did!

Wow, you actually know someone who lives in Coober Pedy, do they like in there? do they live in one of the underground houses? I really am seriously going to visit soon, my 9 year old daughter and I have planned a road trip that takes in Coober Pedy and Adelaide!! When we get to go is another thing.
