The weakness of the artist's eye
is beauty.
NOT
an appreciation of it
but a longing,
a yearn to capture
that which cannot be contained.
No matter how many colors
brush strokes,
melodies,
broken chords
crumpled papers
late-night writing
frenzied sketches
coffee grounds and dreams...
the wastebasket is littered with frustrated attempts
it's never
good
enough.
Iniquity hangs there like a mirror
over every lamp-lit studio
reflecting
all the flaws
and missing shadows,
flat verbs
and unoriginal melodies
[It's all
been done
before.]
The weakness of the artist's eye is beauty,
that's never beautiful enough.
Author notes
On his deathbed, Michelangelo handed a note to his apprentice.
It said:
"Draw Antonio, Draw Antonio, Draw and Do Not Waste Time."
Somehow I found that profound.

you're awesome! that is rather profound....and this poem is...dare i say...perfectly wonderful! i like the concept because there is so much truth to it. i always find it amusing how others see so much beauty or merit in things that we as artists are never quite completely happy with ourselves...very nicely penned!
i hope class isn't too rough...call sometime when you're not busy.

? dear heart this is indeed perplexing...only one word....how very beat of you! reserve would indeed be the major weakness of an artist.

lol, you're a funny one. Cannonsfire gave me the quote "the weakness of the artist's eye" for her contest, but I have yet to write the poem...
I got your wedding invitation today, how exciting! I've got to say, your invite was much cooler (and more practical) than my cousin's... (she had all that complicated writing "two thousand eight, five thirty in the evening...daughter of this, that...very unneccessary..
) speaking of weddings, dylan told me at the 4th of july parade, "You know, getting married soon WOULD be exciting." "really?" (I was surprised since he previously was reluctant to go about it b4 he graduated.) "Yeah, I'm ready to grow up." (!!!) I just discovered I get a ridiculous amt of used furniture whenever I marry (a huge surprise to me) like couches and tables etc... (my mom/grandma have a stockpile in various garages, who knew?) and his main worry was the money aspect. (as he said, he wanted to be able to buy me carpet...) anyway, i found that exciting. hope you had a good 4th of july and that all the wedding prep is going well. I turn 20 in 2 days, it's crazy. ttys! --Shannon
