I put on my make up
glittering, sparkling
becoming the gem of the evening
before taking the stage again
I am a dancer, stripper if you choose,
and an actress of the highest caliber
You may call me Ruby or Garnet
my real name as hidden
as who I really am
I entertain the masses
and do lap dances
smiling coyly all the while
bedroom eyes smoldering just for you
If you think this is who I am
you are sadly mistaken
as are those who assume
I am a whore
I merely entertain the mind;
if you need your body entertained
I can introduce you to a friend,
my boyfriend is my world
but you can't know that
I dance at night
to get through school
your dollars and dances
pay my tuition
for now my body
young and supple
can support the growth of
my mind
which will be sharp long after my looks
and this career
have faded...
Author notes
to my girlfriends who have done what they had to for bigger dreams! You will all make it out!

The last stanza is the best part of this poem. It stands on its own.
