Nothing More than Somewhere

I wasn't sure where I was going,
but I wanted to get there fast.
It wasn't like going nowhere;
I was going somewhere.
Too bad it didn't have a name.

When I finally made it,
out to where ever I guess,
it was like a bad movie scene.
Everything looked so over done,
glossed over and painted.
This wasn't my place;
this couldn't be Somewhere.

Back on the road,
off to a new place;
the some place without a name.

I think I stopped a few more times,
and was just about to finish.
I was out of gas and out of time.
I pulled over and let the car go;
it rolled and rolled on forward.

I'd made it!
I was finally there!
I still don't know
where there is for sure
or exactly where I was,
but I knew it was Somewhere!
And really,
that's all I ever wanted.

I made it to a different place,
the Somewhere I'd dreamt of.
It was everything I'd longed for.
It was just Somewhere.
Nothing more nothing less.

Ever been so ready to get somewhere, you just didn't know where. You knew what you were looking for, but not exactly. You just knew you'd know when you saw it. And what about so ready to be there, but just giving up; only to get there in the end.

Take this literally or read into it. Either way it works. Personally, I read into it. If you don't take this exactly for what it is and start to look at it in a different light, it becomes something new.

I hope this makes sense. If not, just enjoy the story.

    I really like where you took this.! A great road trip you've taken me on .
    Also, I'm sorry that this won't be as detailed of a comment as I'd like...I'm really pressed for time

    you start out really strong. Your diction is tight and cohesive. Also, there was a touch of wry humor that I got from this .

    I really liked the arbitrariness of this piece. It's quite relatable to everyday life. Everyone wants to go somewhere, they know they headed in a direction, and the anticipation of getting there is almost unbearable at times they're so hurried. For some reason, a vacation gone bad comes to mind...like the kids are so excited to get to the location of this vacation, that they can barely take it...but when they get there, it's nothing like what they were expecting...and so the go some place random, not popular, and realize it's the greatest possible place they could have ended up. Hope that made sense

    a great piece. Thanks for entering! And g'luck!

    First of all, I do love your poem! I go on walks all the time and have no idea where I am going. And I think life can be like that all the time. Very in depth insight that you wrote about here. My one suggestion is you used the word "somewhere" way too much in the poem. I'm sure you can think of a more creative title And use different synonyms in the poem. Will make the more in depth. Great job, though! Thanks for sharing

      I agree. I knew I was going to edit this one, I just wasn't sure how quite yet.

  • Whoa, this is really cool. It's defining how arbitrary life is. To me, it showed (somehow) that a lot of the things we strive so hard for are things that just came as a whim...like we draw goals out of a hat, and then shoot as far as we can for them. When we finally get there, we either forget the journey or wonder why we're there.

    That's life for ya. Not everything's like that, I know, but some things truly are.

    Very interesting write! Good luck; I'm sure you'll do well.
