There is a soldier among the sand
Who fights for this, our freer land
To keep it as that home we love
And prays nightly to the man above
His heart may sink to valleys low
But in his soul, he does still know
That people across waters wide
Are hourly, by his side
And under stars, a tear might fall
But then again, haven’t we all
Shed the liquid of our hearts
When a dearly loved one parts?
That soldier, yes, the valiant one
Is my brother, perhaps your son
Or nephew, maybe great and great
And in that moment makes
A hero to this freer land
Despite the desolate, dreary sand.
Author notes
about my brother... rather, for my brother. We're having a going away party before he leaves for Iraq and I'm going to read this and another for him.
