on topic Fresh Water Pearls
Who says beauty must be small, round, and glowing white?
It can be a little flawed
like a freshwater pearl
It's not quite round.
It's not quite smooth.
but it's still beautiful.
it still looks lovely when strung on a string
next to beads that may not
be real emeralds
but are still beautiful
beauty is not defined in extremes.
not by who starved herself to be the skinniest
who bleached her hair to be the blondest
who wears the most jewels around her neck
who had the most plastic surgery to fix nonexistent flaws
perhaps the flaws are what makes us beautiful.
there is more beauty in that bump on her nose
a genetic reminder of the father she no longer has
there is more beauty in his dark brown hair
a subtle expression of his heritage
there is more beauty in our scars
memories of our biggest mistake,
there is more beauty in a freshwater pearl
the small, not quite round, not quite smooth little thing
than in the roundest, smoothest, whitest, most perfect saltwater pearl ever made
a child once came to me
and asked me my name
promptly turned around
and mispronounced it.
that was quite possibly the lovliest thing she had ever said to me.

Author notes
It's really just a random poem about beauty and society and whatnot. I was waltzing around the freewrite section looking for topics that inspired me, and I got this. I'm not really sure where it came from which makes it a little hard to explain. I do rather like it though, so here it is.
