Sitting down this morning, I tried to write for you. Underneath this willow of gnarled twigs, like old pencil stubs. I gathered they would have been sturdy once, as my hand had been when I wrote that first love song for you. Realizing I needed to know the music of the words to paint you with melody.
My hand quivered and was still, as it is today and it's not through age or misunderstanding of the words I hear. I think it is because I cannot give you
the magic and to write down simple phrases, such as 'love' or 'heart' would only
sound trite. I sit and smile here while the willow laughs in my hair, pulling at it like the ribbons you took from it last night. Breeze cavorts with my dress as I recall your hands sliding against my thighs, pulling me from the sink and into your chest.
Twirling the pen; dancing round maypoles and tables when you kissed me and told me my eyes were the emeralds you would never sell. Such gems priceless and too broad for mere words. Said you would sing for me every night, throat pinned to the forever in my arms and the lips that were a quaver and a minum in the huskiness of deep evenings.
I always heard your music, beat steady and unwavering, perhaps I will just let this paper slip from my hand, watch it float and twist around the falling leaves.
I wrote you a love song and you sing it to me everyday. I'll go home and wait
for the encore; never tire of us or that you play the same song as the night
when we were young and you called me 'woman'. Long ago when you were still a boy
and I asked you to sing me a love song.

That song sung to the music bodies play has to be the sweetest ever sung in my estimation. Even though my short term memory is all but gone I can remember those lyrics. This is sad but at least the memories inspire a smile. Good luck in the contest.
Sincerely,
Leo Long

Others may read the words but,
your heart's the one that understands,
That when I sing
it is to your melody,
dancing in my mind
and pirouetting off my lips
Longing to land only in your ears.
