The Ole' French Quarters

Well I skip from eve to eve as I wend my way,
going from home to work or just off for the day.
I sometimes wait for a quarter of an hour
and say a little prayer till there's a pause in the shower.

Oh, how I love the rain down in the Ole' French Quarters
I could sit in a cozy nook, forever and an hour...
watching the rain wash the gray slate streets,
then makin' my way home in my rain soaked feet.

Now some people say that rain's depressin',
for me it's always been mother natures calming blessin'.
So as the storm rolls with clouds and thunder
suddenly, nostalgically I'm transported to the wonder...

Of the rain I love down in the Ole' French Quarters
I could sit and read a book forever and an hour...
listening to the rain wash away the grime;
safely tucked inside from the city's crime.

Author notes

I wrote this song, while here in Florida, missing the rain of Louisiana,
Before Katrina struck New Orleans.

I like this as a song, I bet you could make a living as a New Orleans poet, do you read in public, I bet you can find some musician to put a melody to this or he/she can do background music and you can read it like a New Orleans rap.

Just wonderful. I love it as a poem, but I see how it's strength is for lyrics. Oh, do you know "Rainy Night In Georgia" Brooke Benton? It reminds me of the southern rains as well. You can 'feel' it on the skin.

    Do you have a melody?
    Do you play an instrument?

I hope you place in the contest!
It's hard to rate due to its improvisational meter.
    Love it for the content.
Aesthetics is great too. Blessings, CookieZeal/D

Really agreeing with Zigdaddy. After you got going, I got into the poem.
Loved the second and last stanzas, and your descriptions. Totally agreeing with you on rain being calming.

I always wanted to go to Louisiana. New Orleans in particular. I'm part Acadian, so no doubt I have long lost relatives living there . But I always thought of it as a beautiful place. Sorry about the hurricane that hit it.

    Good job on the poem.

i didn't care for the beginning, but once you got going on this I enjoyed it. Especially liked the imagery of the rain on the gray slate streets. there is a melancholy ambiance to this write that i can identify with. malancholy in a good way.

I would love to see the "Ole' French Quarters" in New Orleans! As for the rain....I love the rain. There is something comforting about it. And after a rainfall the air smells so sweet! ***Pam***

I, too, have many fond memories of Lousiana. It never seems to lose its' antibellum charm for me. Plus it is the home many many people I love dearly. Best wishes in the contest.

    Sincerely,
