The ghostly gates of wisdom

The ghostly gates of wisdom delivered shadows of long ago.
Naked and restless in summers midnight sweat.

Proverbs of the ordinary appear while I slept.
Assembling a line of simple souls yearning to boldly speak.

A Frenchman approached,
curtsey and sly wink,
Whispering; much we have to teach,
Listen care-fully;

“A fine quotation is a diamond
On the finger of a man of wit,
and a pebble in the hand of a Fool.”

Nodding his head upon final word.

Disappeared from sighted view.
One after another approaching,

eager to imprint;
“Many words will not fill a bushel.”
(American dutch)

I giggled just a little…
nor... a gas tank... either, kindest sir.

A warrior with gleaming spear
Boldly stepped forward;
It is not what you are called, but what you answer to.

I felt a desert wind when this soul warmly spoke;
A book is like a garden carried in the pocket.
Source: (Arabian)
Remember child,
If you stop every time a dog barks, your road will never end.
Source: (Arabian)

Dressed in silk, vivid and bold dragon artistry;
A courageous foe is better than a cowardly friend.
Source: (Chinese)

Listen well indeed;
A person who say it cannot be done

should not interrupt the man doing it.
Source: (Chinese)

Each word was red smoke that slowly did surround.

Don’t ask me why,

but this one startled with his grip.

He that is busy is tempted but by one devil,

he that is idle....... by a legion.
Source: (German, Italian)
It is not enough to aim, you must hit.
Source: (German, Italian)

Comforting my senses, I smiled understandingly,

it is fact, a dark poet appears in every circumstance.

Wink-wink.

A man filled with light shining from his crown
each word dripping tears that cascade slowly down;

God did not create woman from man's head,

that he should command her,
nor from his feet, that she should be his slave,

but rather from his side,
that she should be near to his heart.
Source: (Hebrew)
Humble thy pride

Teach thy tongue to say, "I do not know."

Source: (Hebrew)
for the eagle does not catch flies.
Source: (Latin, German)

My heart skipped a beat,
Familiar and wise;
Do not wrong or hate your neighbor

for it is not he

that you wrong but yourself.
Source: (Native American Pima)
A good word extinguishes more than a pailful of water.
Source: (Spanish)

Only two remained, determined, and steadfast;
Abundance does not spread; famine does.
Source: (Zulu)

His simple verse agonized my heart.
So you can imagine my surprise,

finale was to be my irish of ancestory,

who tickled my backside.
A narrow neck keeps the bottle from being emptied in one swig.
Source: (Irish)
A true friend laughs at your stories

even when they're not so good,
and sympathizes with your troubles

even when they're not so bad.
Source: (Irish)

Better to be quarrelsome then lonesome my sweetest dear.
May you always hear our wisdom strenghtening your heart.

    Wow!

    I like this!

    Wisdom from the world over that is shared with us. I love the concept. Incorporating all these various systems of thought and culture into the same poem is a spiritual undertaking that left me going

    Wow!

    That was fun and morally uplifting to read.
  • This was breathtaking! So insightful and wise! Simply wonderful.... I'd join the contest but against this I've no hope. Beautiful, awe-inspiring quotes and word images... I just... wow!! Best of luck in the contest...

    Incredible words of passion, courage, strength...and of course: 'wisdom'. You have brought together a marvelous spectrum of impacting insights. This was a worthy undertaking; I'm glad you undertook it. Thank you for posting these piercing, echoing words. I think we can all use them often...Marvelous job poetess!

    I love all the quotes, at first I thought you came up with them yourself. Strangely, I found the first stanza the most satisfying and I think that is all yours, if I was to give a reason for this it would be that your own words are used whereas with the quotes, it is others words. But really, good stuff.
  • wow, the wisdom you have penned into a poem is wonderful
  • Wow. This is very good. the only thing I could suggest is changing the background, it makes it boxy and hard to read for me. But the poem itself is just lovely.

    In an age where wisdom is rare and undervalued these spirits have imparted wealth beyond gold and precious stones. This deserves five applause!

  • Stunningly beautiful this is. I was mesmerized truly. Lost in your words. Every single proverb struck home with me. Wonderful writing and superb backgrround too. Very very profound. Well done Kathleen.

    lol I like short poems, but I can read through an epic if it captures me. And though I appreciate what you were going for with this piece, I'm left a little befuddled by the massive collection of quotes. They are beautiful and moving, for sure, but it makes the piece feel a little impersonal as a result. Basically, I don't get YOU in this piece, which ultimately is what I look for in any poem, long or short. The intent was not to take "spirit" literally, but to show me the spirit in YOU, the fire and passion, the things that make you breathe and eat. That's more what I'm looking for. As is, it's a beautiful poem, just more socially aimed than personally. Thanks for entering.

    OUTSTANDING

    Now I'm standing to give you an ovation. one truly deserved for giving me mental stimulation! this is remarkable lady, just as you are!

  • Nice work ears!

    I like your collection and thanks, enjoyed reading them.

    At this moment, I'm not saying it's the most profound but I really do like this one a lot and it's one I've not heard before...

    'for the eagle does not catch flies.'

    Love it, yes, it's possible to spend a lot of time trying to catch flies, especially if you let them annoy you more than one should.

    Good luck with the contest!

    I like it much!
