5 AM, it's dark yet; crescent moon shines
with a star, possibly the planet Venus
Shadow of a creature asleep
in the middle of the street
Beneath the Hong Kong orchid tree,
a gathering of Muscovy ducks
In pajamas, are resting
until the car awakens them
Well, ok, no PJ's, lol, but I hadn't
known this was their snoozing place.
On Palm Avenue, not another driver
ahead nor behind us
In this Venice of America, most everyone
appears to be still in summer sleep
A few ambitious people approach the beaches
while the air is relatively cool and breezy
In this hodgepodge of a city which revolves around
the sun, there is no one now on Federal Highway
The big churches and the tourist establishments
are many hours from occupied
(though the 24 hour IHOP's bebopping
)After a while, we spy
glowing blue runway lights;
we have arrived.
