Squeals of excitement coming through the screen door
last day of school excitement.
Swing set already in full play,
The first calls for kool aid by little pig tailed girls,
and scruffy boys, all wearing swim suits and thongs.
Mornings, cleaning up spilled cereal and pools of milk,
crusts of toast and juice glasses, left behind in the rush
to get out the door for adventures and games.
The mid day rush to the refrigerator,
peanut butter, jelly, marshmallows and banana sandwiches,
soda pop cans strung out on the counter
yelps of joy from the lawn sprinkler,
the barking of the dog mixed in.
Bicycles discarded about the lawn, in a heap of towels and tennis shoes.
back packs dumped out on blankets, half read books, nots to friends.
Grasshoppers and honey bees caught in empty mayonnaise jars,
a plot of muddy earth, where dandelions and milk weed have been planted.
A hand written sign, on cardboard, tied to a stick,
stuck into the ground, "My Garden, don't disterb"
piles of dirt around the edge of the glads and rhodees,
toy trucks and grimy, little boys, building roads to nowhere.
Evening, by the television, lost in summer reruns of favorite TV shows.
plates of hot dogs, potato chips, glasses of lemonade and root-beer.
Sleep overs, at this place tonight, at a friends the next.
The final moments and the dreamy eyes of tired children,
ready for another day of fun tomorrow.
It's the essense of the summer child. Another generation of memories
in the making.

Brings Back Memories
A ramble through my childhood memories of summer. I spent them all with my many cousins. There were 36 of us. We had such great fun !
Thanks for the trip!
Good luck in the contest!
