The sky releases breathless sigh
And floats out into night
I open the creaky whitewashed window
Begging for cool breezes
As the drunken cieling fan
Endlessly clacks off center
I slip off my nightgown
Relieving my sticky damp skin
Of itchy restraints of lace and satin
Collapsing utop crisp twisted sheets
Listening
The clicking notes start slow
Then
Natures summer choir flies into high gear
Revving up tempo like a V-8 sports car
Increasing volume
Shooting out across the night
Reaching steady shrill pitch
A sound almost alien
I slip beneath soft slumber
In sultry summer night
Author notes
Inspired by memories of sleeping over at my grandparents' house in the summer. It's a little old farm house in the middle of no where that has no air conditioning.
