Sixth Grade.
First Day.
Life was tough and I still didn't have a perfect grip on the sixth grade.
Mr. Mann tells us to line up by height.
"Locker Assignments." he says.
I stand next to this girl,
I guess her ethnicity,
"Spanish, or Mexican." I say to myself.
Mr Mann. Goes down the line
And hands out little white slips
With locker numbers and codes on each.
We run out to our lockers
And what do you know?
That Spanish (or Mexican) girl had
The locker above mine.
Weeks pass.
At the end of the day I was often hit
By flying jackets and heavy backpacks,
Coming from above.
Finally I got up the courage to say.
"Well, what is your name anyways?"
"Meredith." She said.
Days pass.
"Come on, guess my ethnicity!!"
She urged.
"But what if I get it wrong?"
I complained.
"Just tell me..." She whispered.
"Ummmm. Mexican?" I asked.
She then began to laugh.
"Every guesses that!" She explained.
I wasn't bothered
By the mocking laughter,
We were friends now,
And I enjoyed hearing her laugh,
Even at my expense.
About a month later,
At a Christmas concert,
I see the same girl from school sitting with her parents,
Kind of,
Sort of
Bored.
I walk over
And eventually we are both sitting at the same table,
Burning Hershey Kisses Wrappers,
And even once,
Putting out the whole flame.
Hours pass.
And we are bonded forever,
Laughing over the candles,
Clapping for the performers
(Even the ones we thought were bad).
The next day at school,
I get hit in the head with a backpack,
Again.
And all I do,
Is smile,
And lift the backpack up above my head,
Where it is taken back by a laughing,
Smiling,
Mexican (or Spanish) girl.
Author notes
I'm currently writing poems to all of my friends, seeing as i miss you all! I'm sorta stuck here in the middle of no where (aka, my summer house) and i am getting very anxious to know what will happen next year. btw, the order in which i write these things have nothing to do with how much i like you...i just write the next ones when i get ideas.
oh, and meredith, i do know that you're Spanish, not Mexican.
