Often in the evening, when I was a nun,
I used to spend time in our rose garden.
We grew many types of roses for display
arrangements in the chapel and for ceremonies.
I'd often meditate there, when I was feeling
very down. Looking at those roses, and dealing
with the painful conflict in the convent, and
watching my dream, my vocation slip away...
Well, it put things in perspective. I saw there
that every rose had its thorns; not a rose there
that didn't have at least a few of them. That's
how I viewed my situation for a little while.
That was before things really got bad, and my
vocation as a religious died away. But I always
keep in mind the thought that every rose has its
thorns when things start looking bad. That's reality.
Author notes
I never really cared for roses, except the miniature ones. I like lilies far better.

Great job and nice trophy!

This is beautiful prose on the elements of life compared to a rose. There is something about a poet and a rose that pushes written word to a page. I think it has been that way for centuries.

The feeling here is one of lessons learned and lessons told. Every rose has its thorn, indeed, an old adage used time and again for obvious reasons.
A very nice entry to this contest. I am pleased you have joined our group and look forward to reading more of your work.
Best of luck in the judging. ~Pamela

This is beautifully penned with emotional imagery. You held me captive with the storyline and the imagery. If this is true and not fiction, I sincerely hope the convent didn’t destroy your faith. Well done, thank you for entering our contest.
