Trial of Denial

My troubled heart can no longer ignore
The little subtle changes in your ways,
I’m not the one you turn to anymore.

Your lips will say it’s me that you adore.
While lack of sparkle in your eye betrays.
My troubled heart can no longer ignore.

Your newly frequent trips off to the store,
You haven’t kissed me once in several days,
I’m not the one you turn to anymore.

Your eyes often averted to the floor,
Your breath no longer sweetly turns a phrase.
My troubled heart can no longer ignore.

Can life be, once again, what was before?
As you appease with tired old clichés?
I’m not the one you turn to anymore.

Your silence now can only underscore
The shadow man emerging from the haze.
My troubled heart can no longer ignore,
I’m not the one you turn to anymore.

Nice work! I haven’t seen you write a Villanelle in a while. I can’t help but to think of the conversation that we had earlier today. I do know this: when men start to feel this way, they are questioning their own worth and that will drive a woman away faster than he may think. Emotional attraction to another person comes from the mystery they invoke and the self confidence they have. If one is confident in one’s self then the other person feeds off that confidence in the knowledge that the demon disguised as jealousy has no hold on the relationship.

    • Excellent take on this poem! You got the meaning perfectly and assessed it wonderfully. Like a self-fullfilling prophesy as in the story of Oedipus. By attempting to avoid the prophecy he made it come true. You are wise, love.
