politics of a princess

you were my secret impulse back then
we spent afternoons wandering around like happy puppies
rum in our throats and wind in our long, summer hair
we lived in a hapless city, but together we found
endless lands of undiscovered plants and singular musical notes
your little chocolate kisses in my palm, my hungry silence in your own
simple moments and quiet songs
tucked away on one of our many crimson nights in my candle apartment
protected form your gangs of names and ex-lovers
you wore tight black clothes and we danced in each other’s arms
this night my bed was like a dark haven waiting for you
my gladiator arms like rungs of armor for your gentle ardor
you were my ephemeral, jubilant flight
and I, your stolid muse
but then
and
still
you abscond to Atlanta, all the while speaking of nights alone--
memories, roses, and southern rain
words that dexterously gild your shameless, habitual mishaps
you once told me I was your wild cat
you rode me like a warrior princess through a desert
hot sand under my paws, you were an easy game
well hey warrior princess with your love poet hands
your charlatan words irk, squeak
and fade into oblivion
when you abandon them like you do
you remember someone else's sweet music
and I remember your charm, your exuberance
and the unbelievable hoax of a lover
you still have yet to discover within yourself
you do always know what to say to evade your truth don’t you?
you should be a politician
