Once I was alone, wayward and weak.
Only base, carnal thrills did I seek.
In times of trouble it was much worse;
Self-centered desires were my curse.
Twisted justifications supported my deeds.
Only stunted plants grow from such seeds.
Then, without trying I found a true friend
Who worked hard to make me whole again.
If into selfishness I begin to sink,
I ask: What would my dear friend think?
If it is something that I must hide,
It is something better left untried.
Because of her, I will never give up,
I view my life as an overflowing cup.
Knowing her has been my great pleasure.
Like purest gold, she's my one treasure.
She will ever be much more than I deserve.
She is my strength, she's my Special Reserve.

The contest request was a poem about strength. I also was inspired by the quote:
"A faithful friend is a strong defense: and he that hath found such a one hath found a treasure." Ecclesiastes 6:14

I like the quote.
I also like the idea of having a special reserve, someone to turn to when all hope seems to have fled and you really feel like you're on your own. Its always comforting to know that someone is there for you to rely on, and I admire all those people who've ever been there for someone as this person has evidently been to you. Touching

Nice sentiments
This is a very touching poem, obviously written from the heart. I particularly like the realism in it, as you begin with saying that you are not perfect, which I think most people can relate to. Well done!
