The Sarah Chronicles: Fear

the little girl,
the ghost of who i used to be,
sits on mommy's bed.

she trembles in
the silky pinkness that is her
nightgown,
eyes averted to the ground.

"baby, tell me what's wrong."
her mother's voice is a cigarette dream,
thick with tar and tasting
sweet in its bitterness.

the room smells like all
the different men -

some tall, some chubby,
mostly rich, tie-and-blazer
and excited to hand over candy
to the hot chick's daughter.

the little girl
reaches for her mommy
for the first time in years.

her embrace is warm.
she remembers back to when
she first learned how to ride her bike,

how she fell to the ground.
mommy kissed and bandaged the bruises.
her legs, beaten and scabbed, healed

despite the damage.

the little girl
touched her knees,
felt the grooves of skin
over bones,

the little hairs
sprouting from beneath the surface.

she bit her lip,
looked at her mommy
who stroked her hair back.

she told herself,
if i fall,
i will always get back up.
