From an early age, he claimed that he saw visions.
Uncannily he predicted fires and escapes from prisons.
He never claimed a power and never named a source
for the things that came to him. It was an outside force.
He never accepted payment and he shied away from fame.
Still, his reputation spread and all knew his name.
It was at a séance when she first sat as his side.
In the darkened room, he said she would be his bride.
From that introduction, they were married shortly after.
The first few days were happy as they shared their laughter.
But then came a vision, he saw her lying in their bed
involved in the basest acts that he could imagine in his head.
He knew the truth that night. It was his fall from grace
for he knew her future lover when he saw the face.
Some say it drove him mad or that he was possessed
but he reached out with his mind, like a man obsessed.
They found her the next day nailed upon the wall
while he sat in a chair… he hadn’t moved at all.
There was a trial and sentencing based on the evidence
but he never spoke a word in his own defense.
As they led him to the gallows, he made a last request.
He asked to speak to me, ignoring all the rest.
“You’ve been my one true friend” as he gave me an embrace.
Then he said his final words… “In the vision was your face.”
As I cleaned out his apartment, I saw a letter framed.
Carefully hand printed across the front was my name.
Opening up the paper, it was dated years before,
I read the words he’d written and dropped it to the floor.
A date, a time, a place was carefully inscribed
in his own handwriting, it detailed how he died.
But it was the postscript that gave me the most concern.
It gave the time and place….
of when he would return.
