Just The Eighties

bright and sunny smiles,
hair fluffed and stretched for miles.
straight teeth of commercial white
labeled clothes of colors spite.

friendships were bracelets
unmatchings, pairings, lacelets
either one was in or out-
cliques ruled, there was no doubt.

matching up was merely a game
porsche, limo, or someone's last name.
origami boxes, numbers, colors fold
deft fingers moved so fortunes told,

canvas shoes, and hi-top trends
spiky hair, and chains that bend.
loose shirts untucked, and wild baggies
makeup thick of undreamt fantasies.

anything extreme, told we're crazies-
no, glad it's over, it was just the eighties.

Author notes

Just a small snippet of the multitude of things I remember, that I wish I could forget about the eighties.
I'm glad it's over..

*I can't find a decent contest to place this in. But then again, my luck lately has been, the contest that suits happens after I write the piece, and chances are, they won't allow prewrites. Either case, I'm S.O.L.*
I'm shaking my head and actually laughing over it, so no worries.

wow- this makes me think a lot about all the things that were a part of the eighties in my own world. I too think about the crazy hairdos, the tye-dye shirts, the roller skating parties, truth or dare, shirts tied on the side and all the other crazy things that we thought that were "cool" at the time and now pray that they never come back again.

    - I remember those
  • When I read this I was thinking it must be in the Decades contest. Someone was doing one not too long ago. Quite often, I see them and there is just nothing that comes to me. Yours was so good though, so sorry you missed that one.

  • This is funny. God, I remember the 80s. Actually, I remember them fondly. For the most part.

MTV was so new and such a big deal. I wanted cable, but my parents wouldn't get it. My parents hated Ronald Reagon but I was too young to care. I watched in school and saw the shuttle blow up, and it was like the most horrible thing that could ever happen.

I used half a bottle of hairspray on my hair each morning, and it took an hour to do it and make it big!

Had some really good times back them. :-)

Great poem, brought it all back.

Don't forget jelly bracelts and leg warmers. God, I remember when I used to wear 5 or 6 pairs of slouch socks to match all the colors of my outfit. Talk about hot feet! It's kind of funny looking back at the dorky things we did and wore.

So very true, and god, I remember doing that too! Do you remember those slap on bracelets?
Or the pinwheel layered hair bangs, sprayed to stiffness, that would jut from our heads, lol. What were we thinking, ruining our hair like that? I also ruined many curling irons, even after the heated Benders came out. Well, I guess it was just as popular and the Coke shirts and Guess jeans.

I didn't really live through the eighties with all realisation (I was born in '82) so I can not remember much of all what you have described here.
I think I got a pretty good image of how things were back then though, and not only from my own naive point of view back then.

    Keep it up!

  • Ahhh, I remember them all...[unfortunately] Hahahhaa. Great piece of nostalgia Hetha. Great rhyme as well. Brilliant imagery.
