Put the whodad on the hammer
Slept in dirt and grime
Married Mable in a stable
Smoked some weed to calm his mind
Hitched a ride to San Francisco
Talked with Peggy Sue
Bought an ounce that was milk thistle,
Diarrhea turned him blue
Squeezed a lemon with James Dean,
on the Mount of Mary.
Chuckled loudly in-between,
Loved this land of good and plenty.
In the streets of Greenwich Village,
ran into the law.
Took the pinch without the pillage.
Left his virtue at her door.
Poured a shot of Old Grand Dad.
Had sixteen or more.
Saw the lights die in McDonough's.
Felt his head hit barroom floor
Woke up filled with sad self pity.
Swore to start anew.
But that's the life in the big city.
The Beatnik is still part of you.

Excellent
Such great imagery in this poem. It is so true ,
Woke up filled with sad self pity,
Swore to start anew.
But that's the life in the big city.
The Beatnik is still part of you.
I loved that part in how it ended the poem as a whole. Just an excellent poet you are. I was even laughing some for your poem brought different emotions to it for me. Thank you for sharing.
Many Blessings
Much Love

Hey Cool Daddy O
Hehehe, You sure got this one right. I remermber those days. I remember watching Dobie Gillis as a kid thinkiing who are these crazy people.
Now they seem quite normal, and mild compared to whats around today.
They were a peaceful bunch. You should win with this. Thanks for the smiles and keep playing those Bongos.

yes, I remember well
yes, of these days I remember well...used to live with a beatnik, and in many ways was one myself-it's in the blood...and of a special generation that we BOTH have as part of our legacies...and you present this episode so well...weaved ever so gently with a genuine mind and heart...well done...all the best...loved it!

Aww this is too funny
Takes me back a few years! But I think there's a lot of the beatnik in everyone of us!
A fine piece here that takes the reader on a wonderful 'trip'
All the best to you

Oh, this is too funny!!! Like most of us, your beatnik just didn't learn a lesson well. I could name a few like that, but I don't want to embarrass myself.

You can be this one won't be removed, my friend. Thank you for such a delightful read. Patricia
