I'm dying for a cigarette
has someone got a light?
the last night at the county fair
the carousel falls down tonight
I'm merry as I go around
and darkness floods across the land
the haunted houses cobweb call
I finally think I understand
The city streets are empty
where once there was a throng
ghosts and silent silhouettes
a tribute to the prophet's song
the wolves have come to rule again
feasting on the dying land
dollar bills are kindling now
charity an empty hand
December of two thousand twelve
a Mayan holiday
the poles that shift, a godsent gift
the sackcloth sun that shines today
six billion voices raised in fear
one third will never call again
the earth will quake and turn to dust
in altered course the world will spin
Ten new plagues befall us now
as horsemen rise to rule the night
the high ideals which seemed so real
forgotten as we learn to fight
for air to breath and table scraps
left over from our glory days
no one gathers anymore
for curtain calls or passion plays
The crops are laying rotten
on the fields that I once plowed
All those rich and weak bastards
I see now are not so proud
my shotgun is the currency
upon which I rule my home
A second age of darkness rules
there will never be another Rome
The dinosaur long passed away
and we're not far behind
it may be that I will see
the failing gasp of all my kind
the last breath of a dying man
the stink of our repose
the sulfur sun that rules the sky
will cast no light as my eyes close

thank you for sharing such a high-quality poetic verse in this contest ... excellent choice of vocabulary and vivid imagery highlight this thought-provoking poem ...
it is very up-to-date in these days while hurricanes challenge the life-situation of those who have the morbid honor of their visit ... a little foretaste for 2012 ? who knows ... but certainly a sign-post of warning for the earthlings to become more respectful to their mother nature ...
blessings,
maa

A song was playing as I read this piece..one of the lyrics were "live, like you are dying"..we should all take note. Great write.

A bery interesting poem with great flow and interesting choice of words. I liked the assonance and alliteration. I hope the world goes on and on and if it must end, then may I be in the arms of my lover when that happens. Amen,

well done , reminds me of a quote by Albert Enstein; I don't know what weapons World war three will be fought with but World war four will be fought with sticks and stones.... Better stock pile some ammo... lol...again I really like this even though the spin is rather dark and well within my lifespan.

I liked this a lot. Based from the Mayan Calender. There are no dates on that calender AFTER 2012. Your imagery was fantastic in this.
Such power and foreboding of an event that could yet still happen. Wonderful writing. I have written a piece based on the same theme. Very well done indeed.

This sounds like my dad
Death, devastation, and destruction. But it's been predicted to be true. I prefer to live each day, a moment, in the present as a it is...a gift. -
Nicely done. This is a very apocolyptic view of the future based on the Mayan myths. I wonder if the date will cause more unrest than Y2K and other similar end of the world scenarios.

Sounds like the movie we all see of Mel Gibson...Interesting that it might even happen sooner than that!! ~Sie
