A Smile So Bright (Tribute to Jane McGrath)

A smile so bright and beautiful
So whole and full of life
A mother of small children
A cricket legends wife

In a world so full of prejudice
So full of evil and of good
Why does illness pick out anyone
It's something I've never understood

There are people in this life
Who take whatever comes their way
And turn it into a blessing
To brighten someone's day

You identified a need
And in the middle of you pain
You have used your circumstance
To forward that needs gain

Australia has many sporting hero's
Of who's skill they'll quickly boast
But I hope that in the McGrath's ordeal
They'll realize what matters most

And to Glenn and those she loved
I pray 'the broken hearted will be blessed'
Is a beatitude that you'll hold dear
In this, life's greatest test

I've never heard of Jane McGrath but am sad to hear that she lost her life to cancer. She's very pretty on the outside, and based on your description of her, just as pretty on the inside. I just watched a movie called The Bucket List. There's a scene where the two characters are talking about the ancient Egyptian idea of heaven, where two questions are asked of everyone at the entrance.

    1. How much joy did you feel in your life?
    2. How much joy did you give to others?

Pretty strange questions for a culture that kept slaves by the thousands, but I like the questions. It seems like Mrs. McGrath could feel very good about both questions.

Have you sent this to the memorial website? I'm sure they would print it.

You touch on the enigma of mortality in a very touching way, Bec. Cancer, I think, so often speaks of environmental poisoning, although, many will argue it is hereditary. It is a thief, and I'm so sorry for her children and her husband's loss. There really are no answers that are reasonable, are there. I'm glad her life was a gift. That can not be taken.

I'm glad you showed this to me.

    Love,
    Karen

This was very touching. Its so sad to hear on the news of someones passing after so many years of pain, but she stayed strong for her young family. This will be well cherished. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Thank you, she was an amazing woman! I was quite shocked when I'd heard she'd died, the same as I did when Belinda Emmett died, I just thought that in the end they'd win

This is a lovely tribute to an amazing woman. My heart goes out to Glenn and their gorgeous children. My family and I have watched Glenn's career from his first selection in the Australian cricket team (as he is a distant relative) and Jane's experience touched us deeply. It is a sad loss to so many. Thanks for writing this.

Thank you for your comment, Glenn is definitely a favorite sportsman in Australia, and Aussies tend to take the whole family of our national treasures into our hearts don't we. I was so shocked that she'd actually died, I never expected it.

Oh, i was just about to send you a private message to tell you about this poem as I was sure you'd want to read it, you beat me to it. I was also shocked to hear it on the news tonight, I did not expect it at all, I just thought in the end she'd be ok and in my sadness all I could do was sit and write her a tribute.
