You almost died last night,
I have been with you since then;
All this time I've held your hand,
So please don't try to go again.
Your eyes are closed so softly,
It is hard to believe you're in pain;
I guess that is what the drugs are for,
There to ease the strain.
The white bandages on your arms,
They aren't as white as they were;
Slowly they change to red,
Slowly it stains the bed.
A nurse comes in to the room,
She pushes me aside;
I have to let go of your hand now,
Please don't leave me behind.
She changes the red bandages with white,
and cleans the dirty sheets;
Then she goes and leaves again,
I'm still here on my knees.
I hold your hand once again,
It is slowly going cold;
If she hadn't interrupted,
It wouldn't have happened.
Sorry for not being there for you,
It seems that you needed me;
But you are here right now,
And I am here with you.
You're here but the place is silent;
What happened to the happy face,
That would light up the room?
It's gone now like your consciousness.
The beeping stopped some time ago,
From the machine next to your bed;
Your skin is getting paler now,
I wipe the hair from your face.
You look so peaceful now,
And I smile softly to you;
While stroking your cold hand,
It's just you and me.
The doctor enters the room,
He says you are gone;
But that is far from the truth,
You are more real than before.
This is the real you,
I am glad to have met;
The tears run down my cheeks,
We never did say good-bye.
But that is okay,
I am going to be there for you now;
I am going to join you today,
Under this sky of gray.
So here I am,
Smiling, and yet at peace;
Because I am finally with you,
And that is how it will stay.
We lie side by side in the earth,
Watching the world pass by;
None of it matters now,
We are so far away.
