Jan

Your arrival was announced, tiny with a warm tongue,
my puppy, my Jan, my mad, faithful running friend.
So few years, or so it feels, and look at you now.
Old and stiff, with eyes that plead for release from pain.
Even now, with your arthritic walk you try to play your games,
but this brings no joy, it breaks my heart to watch you move.
Your tail contradicts the suffering that you endure.
Lay down my friend and rest, let me stroke your velvet ears,
let me take you once again to the river,
to the woods where you found such joy.

As your eyes close for the final time,

May you to these precious places fly.

Sleep well my friend,

I will never forget you.

Author notes

This is about my dog, who sadly and tearfully had to be put down. He was so soft, and I am sure that he wanted release from all that suffering. I chose the wooded background as it is where I often took him.

aww, so sorry to hear this! We had a beagle that had to be put down a few years ago. He'd been around since before I was born and I'd grown up with him but he hurt his back and we put him down, the humane way of course, so I know how much that sucks. This is a very well written poem and a beautiful tribute to your faithful friend!! Thanks for sharing!

Parting is sad, put the alternative of prolonging suffering is so selfish. You have written of sweetness and memories and induring love and it touches the heart.
