I Walk On.

A bright translucent moon shimmers over head.
It appears full tonight.
Shadows dance energetically on the sides of old sullen buildings.
Pretty daytime facades show their true ugliness.
Darkness is eternal from where I stand.
I walk on.
Voices in the distance bend and curve with the wind.
Someone’s foot steps make a soft thud on the concrete
behind me, I turn to look.
No one is there, yet the foot steps continue
I pause to the aroma of stall Bar-B-Q lingering in the air.
My presumption a cook out or party is finally concluded.
I walk on.
More foot steps join the other behind me, then soft chatting.
I turn once more, but only shadows of what was greet me.
They too must be out on a midnight stroll.
Heavy traffic arises in the distance, then cease.
I stand and let the breeze graze my face.
It seemed to add pleasantness to the night.
I breathed in deep and sighed softly.
I walk on.
Lights in houses flicker off, must be getting late.
Both sets of foot steps turned back in the opposite direction.
Shouts and muffled crying, makes the air feel tense and lonely.
A sudden loud slam of a door interrupts the nights peace and
stiffens its mood.
I hesitate a moment wondering if I too should turn back and go home,
only obscurity lay before me.
Another cool breeze appeases my mind, persuading me to continue.
I walk on.
