blood of innocence

Handheld clumps of yellow Daffodils,

Easter baskets of Lily-of-the-Valley,

Holly berries and Evergreen boughs;

all gifts from a child's loving heart.

But most precious of all...

is the single red Rose,

plucked from

the neighbor's prize-winning bush,

bravely offered from small bleeding fingers,

for it carries the sweetest fragrance...Love.

    Thank you for your entry

A rose does carry the sweetest  fragrance of love, as of pain too

    Thank you again.

Beautiful... cheekily even more beautiful and yes, precious!

    single red Rose,
    plucked from
    the neighbor's prize-winning bush,
bravely offered from small bleeding fingers,
    carries the sweetest fragrance...Love.

For me this is the heart of the poem as it stands even on its own.

    Love it!

    Good luck in the contest.

    Sol

Sol...I too felt this part of the poetry was the strongest, but I wanted to slowly walk up to the rose before I plucked it, so to speak...I always appreciate your comments. Thank you, Rhonda

Well hello Nobody126, long time, no see... I am glad you appreciate the imagery and yes...the broken heart of a child punished for this sweet act of love(by my neighbor, not me)...thanks for commenting. Peace always, Rhonda

    Oh, so very sweet!

bravely offered from small bleeding fingers

What a beautiful line! This line by itself just shows pure, innocent, unconditional love. It's a stunning image.
(I must say though, your background is a bit too sickly I think - unless it's just my screen ) I would have loved a much deeper background with lighter writing (but that's just me, I overdo that!)
Beautiful poem. Good luck in the contest.
