Cowboy

Only love lay unborn beneath a dusty sky
Riding bareback through the waters of the river
when I first discovered you,
a truth as empty as the sun's morning light.

The unknown is warm and sweet beneath my legs
over and over, I curled my body into you
The scent of your skin remains,
hidden within the sticky sweet heat of summer

I laid my head to the soft hairs of your chest
memorized the tattoos on your arms,
the braid that ran down your back
and the sweet taste of you in my mouth.
Love is an illusion, as the setting sun.

Pure as the sky, that ripened
and burst with pink orange light
you lay your body over mine,
placed your hands on my back.
Beneath a deep Ohio sky,
the horses run free in the distance.

In the morning, I imagine
a love, as sweet as the deep of your voice
that sang so gently to me
as we rode bareback through the river
underneath a dusty sky
where only love lay unborn.

Please tell me what you think
