Jonas Brothers Fanfiction *part 19*

KEVIN'S POV

After paying for my Grande Chai Latte, I grabbed my phone and called Nick from the driver's seat of my Jeep Commander. The news that Brandi and Kyana wold be in town might cheer him up.
"Hey Kev," he said drearily into the phone after the seventh ring.
"Hey Nick. I'm got some awesome news!" I said, trying to sound happy and upbeat.
"Cool..." was all he said in response. This whole surgery thing had hit him almost as hard as when he was diagnosed with diabetes.
"Do you wanna know what it is?" I asked, trying to produce more enthusiasm from him.
"Sure...I guess," he sighed.
"Brandi and Kyana are in our neck of the woods, Frobro, meaning we can hang with them any time we want for a while," I said, smiling. Instantly, the emotion coming through the phone changed.
"Really?" he asked excitedly.
"Yeah. Isn't it rockin?" I said, trying to keep the mood light.
"Totally! I've gotta go tell--" he said, while I listened to him begin to stand up.
"Joe...?" I said with as little emotion showing in my voice as possible.
"Uh...n-no...I was just...um..." he stuttered. He was beginning to sound depressed again.
"Just go let mom and dad know. I'll be back at the hospital in an hour ot so. I'm gonna drive around some," I said, buckling my seatbelt and reaching to turn the keys in the ignition.
"Ok...see you later, man," he said sadly. I hung up the phone and turned onto the road.
After about five minutes of pointless driving, I decided to call Tatum. I had promised to help her move into her new apartment, but hadn't had the time to stop by yet.
"Hey Mufasa!" she said happily into the phone.
"Hey Tater! How's the moving thing going?" I said as I turned onto my street; I was heading home to go pick up something for entertainment at the hospital...and a few things that might help Joe recover.
"Oh, you know...terribly," she said nonchalantly.
"What? Why?" I had just pulled into driveway and was getting out of the car.
"Well, the movers never came to help with the bigger furniture, and someone broke into my apartment." I stopped halfway through opening the front door and my mouth fell open.
"Are you kidding? Did they take anything?"
"I'm not sure. Most of it was still in boxes, obviously, so I can't really check. That, and they broke a window."
"I'll pay for the repair," I said as I stepped inside the house. I shook off my thick, woolen coat while keeping the phone to my ear and began heading up the stairs.
"That's sweet of you, but my dad said he would cover it." I paused again.
"Your dad?!" I asked incredulously. Her dad had cheated on her mom when she was only six years old. Last year marked the beginning of his pathetic attempts to get back into Tatum's life; she was 20 now.
"Yeah...I don't really know either. Maybe you should cover it." I nodded my head furtively, realizing that she couldn't see, only when I reached the top of the stairs.
"Of course. I'll write the check as soon as I can."
"Thanks, babe."
"No problem. I have to go now. I'm picking a few things up at the house and then I'm heading back over to the hospital."
"Oh, ok. I'll talk to you later then?"
"Right. Bye, babe. I love you."
"Love you too. Toodles!"
I reached Joe's bedroom and looked around. I didn't really know what I was looking for, so I began to go through random drawers and shelves. I was removing some green Silly Putty from my purple long-sleeved shirt when an idea struck me.
I ran over to his dresser and pulled out the bottom left drawer. I pushed his many pairs of socks and underwear out of the way, trying not to cringe, when I finally found what I was looking for: His old glow-in-the-deak Barney T-shirt. He still had it after all these years. He liked to think no one knew about it, but being his older brother sometimes means spying, so I've known for years.
I pulled it out and stuffed it into a small duffel bag I found lying on his floor. Then I grabbed a few video games, board games, comic books, movies, and snacks, and I was heading back to the hospital.
