She put a word into his palm,
etched in flat stone
it filled first his eyes,
then shone like a candle
captured his visions,
and caught in fire
his heart followed...
for a time crossing a desert
in trial, he was a flame beneath gleaming day
light unto himself in turbulent night
when he reached the other side, parched and dry
his hand was empty,
but his soul had become an oasis.

Wow! This is such an uplifting poem! I get from it the power of a womans' influence a mans' life..One could gleam alot more, but that is how I interpreted it..It gives encouragement to we women that would deny our power of influence in our loved ones lives..Outstanding in imagery and words...Absolutely Profound write!!!

This just made me feel good. Such empowerment in a word, imagine...
oh -
- you did. And did so very well with this poem. I felt it move my spirit as I read and wanted to be part of the words, part of that inspiration that left the soul so learned.
As always, a wonderful creation from your pen. Just such a pleasure to read and enjoy your verse. Thank you. ~Pamela

So well inspired! How you can see a personage beyond all what is written about them. You've captured her essence and showed it in your words in such a wonderful way. I think very few (if any, besides the author) have seen what you saw, or felt how you did.
JustBreathe's comment is a wonderful complement to your thoughts, which means your words were very effective.
Excellent poem, goes to the Best of PK collection.

I think you know the story well, the widow woman in the city, one that lingers in thoughts long after the book is finished, the wish of every writer...thank you so much...h

Your poetry beautifully captures the essence of life.
When we embrace life, in all its glory ... we will experience both great love and great heartache ... mixed with incredible accomplishments and trials that test our strength and determination. But in the end, if we've been paying attention, we will become more wise and loving ... and will come to learn who we truly are and appreciate the peace that resides in our soul. Lovely imagery and phrasings H.

his hand was empty,
but his soul had become an oasis."

for your kind and thoughtful words, so much truth and wisdom there; we have it within to be as we wish, the courage to start and the faith to finish do not come easy, so we ask for strength, good judgment and that we might see what is shown to us...thank you so much...H

Such beauty and truth! I am at once in awe of the images. A single word, and it was enough. Into his palm . . . it was clearly open to receive. Etched in flat stone. . . flat, that the act of etching could be free and not cumbersome, and upon a stone .. .something long in the making, and lasting. It is no wonder that he was filled and consumed. And yet what strikes me also is what happened to him. This man has suffered, he has known thirst, he has traversed brutal, hot sands.
And he is changed. He has now an even greater treasure than that which he once held only in his hand. The filling up is now not from without, but from within. And his treasure is not as apparent as when he flamed in the dessert, but, though quiet, it is satisfying.
I love the word oasis there. . .an oasis is something a dry traveler longs to see, and they take from the oasis all that they need and are filled. And this marvelous oasis has come to dwell inside of him. Now HE is in the position to give. Not something from his hand, for it is empty, but drink from his soul.
This is amazing poetry, my friend. Honest. Satisfying.

I read Paulo Coehlo's Fifth Mountain, a story based on the prophet Elijah...and my favorite person in the story of the struggle of man and God is a widow woman, ...woman...who becomes a symbol of so many things... thank you...PK

A life time of regrets, of love that once was. If as Chez says we look back with it as a light, a candle that lights our emotions and can be your oasis...even for a little while then it was worth it.
Love ~Sie

Some people come into your life and shine brighter than the stars but like nova's they flash and then they burn. If they show you a little more of yourself before leaving, you can look back with genuine affection and still smile. Love, C
