Archeology *

What is history?

A tale told only by victors?
Or stories revealed by
The fate of victims,
Within the tells.
Uncovered by scholars
Who have no political
Bells to ring, or chimes
To distort the sound
Of songs the tells do sing.

Centuries after our civilization
has passed, what songs will be sung,
From the ruins of cities that are
Are buried beneath the dust and dung.
Will stories of heros come forth
Who fought to save all our
Civilization is worth? Or will it be
Stories of the "greedy" ones
Who only cared for Prestige;
Power and wealth!

If descendents of the human race
There are, perhaps they'll find a way
To send a message back, so our feet
Of clay do not create a lack.

Thoughtful work. Is it not written history which reflects the victors' view, however? Does archaeology not rather revel in the discovery of graffiti and rubbish tips before palaces and fine inscriptions? Enjoyed the read.

(Actually - on the second read, that's exactly what you are saying)

Love your deep thought and questions in this. Reminds me of one I did ('antiquated aesthetics') on old paintings - and the fact that many of them do not depict the truth at all, but we in the future don't know that - we tend to literally interpret what we see (which makes for inaccurate history...lol).
I like this. I've always thought it would be wonderful to visit, and dig, in the Valley of the Kings or maybe at Macchu Picheu (badly mispellled...LOLOL). But even if we do dig up the antiquities, we don't have the truth and knowledge of what they actually are or what they mean.
Great write!!! got my mind off on many tangents!!

What future generations look back upon and see will hopefully be something that makes their hearts skip a beat with denial and outrage at such blatant disrespect for our planet earth, and our undying need to continue consuming everything around, simply to "keep the economy flowing". I loved this piece dude, please keep thinking out of the box and never stop writing.

  • Reminds me of my study of the Civil War; the Union saying it was over slavery; the Confederacy saying it was over states rights, and economic in nature due to certain tariffs on southern goods, posing the question: With only a small minority of southerners owning slaves, do you really think they would break from the Union with all the consequences that go with that action, and go to war over that one issue? Good question; but in light of President Bush and his actions today, the logic kind of gets blown to hell. (LOL) I say it was both.
  • This is a very contemplative poem. It asks an important question. History is often written by the victor, but occaisioally, the victim is also heard/

    • Unfortunately, some victims do not have any descendants to tell their stories; so we only have the silent witnesses of the remains in the tells. Are the archeologists interpretations always correct? I don't know. You would have to ask an archeologist.
