Tanka for Tenku

    Thank you!
I've loved Kitaro since a late friend gave me Tenku in '86, also like Silk Road. Yes, I've heard Tangerine Dream (they did the soundtrack to the film, Bladerunner), but their sound is not as soft and woodwindy as Kitaro.
I love Loreena McKennitt too - I have the audio link to Dante's Prayer on my poem, 'Prayer For the Departed'.

I shall check out the others you've mentioned as well.
You can find a few interesting audio links on my pages, like The Great Compassion Mantra, dance version, in Sanskrit; The Gravity of Love by Enigma.

You don't have to "stay away", you know

    The Great Spirit

    Great spirit
All living things come face to face with the great spirit
And the great spirit dwells within all living things
    Tree
    Flower
    Water
    Earth
    Wind... all things
At times the great spirit is severe
At times the great spirit is soothing
    Encompassing all life
    Everyplace the great spirit dwells
is the source of a gentle crystaline light
And within that light we become one
Floating as if in our mother's warm body
Living together as children of the earth.
    Without time
    Without end...

This is one of my favorite poems by Kitaro. The Light of The Spirit was the first album I heard by him, at the age of 11 and absolutely loved it. I now own 16 of his cds. And also have the dvd, daylight, moonlight. A concert recorded live at Yakashiji. I've never seen anything like it. I understand that he has produced over 30 albums since the early '70s. What's ironic, is that he had a rock band before discovering what he could do with a synthesizer. You've probably heard of Tangerine Dream, their sound resembles Kitaro a bit, and they've been around for as long as he has. Others you should look into, if you haven't heard of them; Sheila Chandra, an Indian singer with a voice like no other. No instruments are played, only her voice. What set her apart from other singers is that she speaks in tongues, not religiously. Lorenna Mckennitt, not new age, but the mixture of exotic instruments and her voice are unique. She's an explorer and the lyrics are about her journeys. She's Canadian. Francesca Gagnon, lead singer in Cirque du Soleil's album. Natacha Atlas, also not new age, but she is considered to have one of the world's best female voices. Very similar to Fairus, a Lebanese legend. Atlas sings in Arabic, Spanish, French and English. Kristy Thirsk, perhaps the most underated, yet, the most beautiful soprano voice I have ever heard. She is the voice to Delerium's album, Karma and is also a guest in Chimera and Semantic Voices. Finally has an album of her own. Delerium makes new age music, very different from Kitaro's, but also very original. Other that I really like is Govinda. A mixture of Indian and Andalucian. I could go on and on when it comes to new age or world music. Anyhow, I saw your message and had to reply. I seldom find people who knows who Kitaro is. Will stay away now.

Thank you, Charishma! Ah, I think you'd enjoy that album. Kitaro is a Japanese composer of 'New Age' style music on a type of synthesizer (more woodwind and ethereal sounding than that would suggest). That one, "Tenku", came out in 1986. The track titles: Time traveller; Milky Way; Romance; Wings; Aura; Message from the Cosmos, give you an idea of the mood they create.
Kitaro also wrote a poem that accompanies that album...

"I send a message of sound
    Towards the sky
    Engulfing empty space
    Soaring far beyond grasp
    High above mountain tops
    Beyond ocean waves
    Stretching to reach the Andes
    And lightly touching Nepal

    Watch as the sounds flow
Listen as you feel the wind blow
    Nature is colored with romance
Unfolding a drama day by day
    Plants breathe a rhythm
    Insects play their melody
    Light flies as wind cries
Now catch the sound...feel the light

By feeling things which are with life
Innocents respond to the delicate sigh
Of the world, weaving their own dreams
Dreams which spread throughout the world
People begin to sing harmonies of love, wordless
    This is a beginning
    Connecting the dream
To the color of your breathless heart
Peace and tranquility, you need only to sing
    It is for you."
    ~ Kitaro

    Enjoyable!

Oh Gennelle! I could spend all day looking at the lovely bubbles you have up here and letting myself float in the excellent imagery of this tanka. You have given this a very nice title which with it's cute rhyme grabbed my attention and got me here The tanka for Tenku is a treat for two! {lol...two eyes, I mean!}. I haven't heard the Tenku albumn but would love to do so if you shared the link to it with me. I'm sure it will transport me to a wonderful lightness. By the way, who is 'Kitaro'? I enjoyed the etheral feel of this tanka. L1 and L2 are a wonderful way to describe musical notes. The tanka has a wonderful Karumi{lightness} and that just sinks into the reader with every line. I'm enjoying reading this over again and again, each time dipping into it's beauty and feeling so wonderfully light! Now, I feel like dancing under the sky in the green fields. Thank you, Genelle

I am going to have to take a whole day to read your poetry, and every single last comment you get. Where the heck do you get this 1)wisdom 2)ability to communicate what most people just sit silently with 3)style. How can I be anything BUT speechless.

Thank you Andrew ~ Yes, it's the kind of music you can be transported by. Even Kitaro wrote a poem that goes with that album, himself (not Tanka). Thank you very much for your kind comments.

Thank you blackLight! You just described Tanka & Haiku poetry perfectly yourself: "how...you said so much with saying so little". That's it exactly!

I have to admit, I hven't heard the 'Tenku' album. But I think I have a grasp on the music from reading your piece.
These poem has a nice gentle surreal feeling to it, it is a pleasure to allow oneself to just drift with the images you have used.
