Tennessee Waitress
I have seen them in Brazil,
in Germany, France, Italy, Greece.
I have left tips for them in Amsterdam,
London, Tijuana, Montreal.
They flirt, tease, & talk trash
or smile & utter terms of endearment.
In Tennessee, a waitress came to my table.
She looked at me, she blushed.
Every word she spoke,
she looked at me & blushed.
Two women at the pool table,
playing to display themselves
were confident,
sure of where men’s eyes focused.
When she brought the check,
I asked her: Do you know
what makes you better than those two
women at the pool table?
No… What? she asked.
You can blush I told her.
Do you know who Ernest Hemingway was?
Yes she said.
Hemingway wrote: A woman who can’t blush
is worthless.
Did I blush? she asked.
Every time you spoke to me I said.
If Hemingway wrote that, she said
it must be true.
Please tell me what you think

Gold nuggets in the wilderness. As one who lives in the midst of it, I can testify that they are there. More precious by their rarity.
