Lingering

Something that should have been so good
Has now been made unbearable through time
By the ghosts in all of the dark corners
Of this house, which once was shared by lovers
Who clung to fragile dreams of tomorrow
It is full of unwanted memories
Everything became twisted by that one moment

The world outside, which once held that one hope
Of brighter horizons for the weary
Is inhabited now only by pain
And the crimson transgressions of those men
They, Seduced by everyday comforts
They made it impossible to remain
Demons prey on the wounded and the sick
Heralds of a more understanding time
Are now inescapable messengers
Of self-destruction, hate and avarice
Serving only as painful reminders
Of the vicious acts of love we commit

Running from monsters through the endless night
A man loses sight of his function here
His only goal is to catch that next train
Hoping it will take him to brighter realms
Somewhere not so painfully familiar
Someplace where, for however brief a time
He can find sanctuary from himself
On these journeys, his only true comfort
Is that someone glancing out the window
Might, at least for a moment in time
Think to count him among those still living
