The Air Of Remembrance

Memories slip past smiles in quiet eyes,

licking the spoon after mother baked cakes,

dainty little dollops of warm pleasure

that flood the mind with generous beauty,

and I gather up sighs with ice-cream tones.

Shopping lists that stretch eternity's grin,

a handkerchief wipe as friends laughed madly,

her voice in the distance as I built dens,

shouting me in for dinner was ready,

these are the times I will savour the most.

Tears of happiness flip me over love

while wisdom shines in the lessons given.

Singer sewing machines humming all day,

from teddy bears to sport bag leather scent,

it's all up in the air of remembrance.

I like the title of the poem and the use of the phrase in the last line. Some of the phrases are really wonderful, such as "Tears of happiness flip me over love while wisdom shines in the lessons given.." "Memories slip past smiles in quiet eyes," "flood the mind with generous beauty," among others. Any mother would love this poem. It is a very well written tribute!!

now this truly amazing!! your words usage and metaphors
are just brillant, this sounds like memories of your mother,
of your childhood, you triggered thoughts, they go back to a time
when things were simple, pop bottles got redeemed, and comic
books were a childs past time, instead of X BOX.
    your an amazing writer,

    with love and blessings

  • This is the best one can do for his mother, keeping memories alive. This one is beautiful all along, until the end makes this so sad. purely from the heart, and I could see a little of myself in this write, loved the building dens bit of it, most of all I loved the reference of the Singer sewing machine, when I was down with my parents in December, I could see that mother purchased a new sewing machine, although she has the good old Singer, but just for keeps, the wheel and the paddle as I would like to call it have been stuck as they have not been fed with oil or grease.

This was a treat to my soul, thanks for writing this for your mum, and thanks for sharing this.

    Wonderfully penned!

    Love and light,
    Lencio

I had a dainty little dollop of warm pleasure once then I got thrown off the bus
Ah mothers what heart doesn't melt at the thought of dropping them off in front of the retirement home after a Sunday spent repeating yourself like hairless parrot.

    very sad

this is as usual an exellent poem written from the heart, a lovely tribute to a lovely lady, even though i never met her, her personality shines through. great stuff, but it makes me feel ashamed that my mother and myself never met or spoke for 10 years before she died. i allways regret that, thank for sharing..p.s. i am going soon to seek new pastures, i get bored so fast...i really do have nothing else to say..and i sure aint gonna work at writing...my friend say im a concrete poet whatever that means. well the concretes crumbling. and i allways know when to quit when i start to loose the drive...lol...keep well my friend, oh and i dont know of anyone who could help you improve the poem..a student cant help the master...nuff said... cheers

  • This is a wonderful write and wonderful memories of a life spent of love. Great job. Thanks for sharing this with us and thanks for the wonderful imagery and emotions. You write wonderfully. Thanks for joining in this contest.

Beautifully written memories of your mother....

I lost my own mom in 1988 when she passed during a quadruple bypass at the age of 54, and my dad three years later to an aneurysm. I'm so glad that I have some very fond memories of both my parents. Although, my parents divorced when I was still a baby, I cherish the memories I have of both of them, and I always will.

  • what a beautiful write, it brings back so many memories. I love it!

Simple memories... never forgotten, their just always there "in the air of remembrance". This is something so very well written. I loved it very much. The first stanza was so tasteful--with the ice creams and baked cakes. The second stanza-- mentioning all the most profound memories. And the third one was the most meaningful one. I appreciate your most beautiful words weaved together forming this piece. I did mention that I loved it right??

    Your wonderful poem triggered...

Mmmm smell of hotpot cooking and warm nourishing stews, when coming home wet and raw with cold.. palmolive soap .. floating boats in puddles ..
    'air of remembrance'
    'wisdom shines in lessons given'
    in these formative years..
'singer sewing machine humming' 'bak[ing] cakes' a lovely Mum fondly recalled
I am so glad dear poet for those times you savored 'the most'.. a beautiful tribute to your Mum.. and I can just picture you building your den with little muddy knees .. just one more minute .. but starving for tea.

Each line builds upon the last line and your poem is simply outstanding! From the first line "Memories slip past smiles in quiet eyes," to the last "it's all up in the air of remembrance it is unique and you want to keep lines like these in your thoughts and feelings. Not only does it allow you to share in your wonderful memories but it encourages the reader to think of their own past. Beautiful! Good luck in the contest!
