City…

The city is my lover
in chill winter she holds me
with white whispers of spring rain
and bustled streets always feel of home,
I am lost and found in faceless crowds;

and the city feels my passion
in warm summer nights
when music rises like humid smoky air
to bind sweat and love to bed sheets
and give each kiss the taste of sea water.

City is the breath of autumn
when misplaced leaves swirl
to cover so much fallow hard ways
as cracks and seams
become fortresses for fierce new life.

Clacking heel points and swaying hips
catch my eyes in every season
words stick to fixed gazes
and cascades of beauty flow
like leather and denim streams,
mascara butterflies over pouting flower smiles;

love passes by in wide storefront windows
from buses and El trains, taxis and sultry steps.
For the city is a lover that brings many others
so many moonlit skies in dark eyes
treasures on lips and teasing trips
across seas of swollen tides.

Big streets aglow in pulsing nights
neon light, city of mine,
you are a dear lover always near and burning
life’s fire flowing in your asphalt veins.

Excellent! Loved the "mascara butterflies" and "asphalt veins". I really enjoyed these uniquely vibrant, "natural" descriptions of the city. Glad to see this in the spotlight!

It's quite something to feel this way about a city. You're fortunate, then.

  • Goodness my friend. This piece is a stunner. I was there - in it all, in the city. So many great lines in this

winter holds me with white whisper of spring rains,
and give each kiss the taste of sea water,
life's fire flowing in your asphalt veins.

I just could go on and on.

Such a pleasure to find this beauty in the spotlight. A truly worthy piece for this honor.

    Excellent verse. ~Pamela

I love the sexual tension within this piece.

We must have similar ideas - if only mine were as effective

Every time I read a poem like this about a city, I think of New York (when thinking of a city in USA), must be the influence left by Sinatra.
You have written few city poems, and all of them are full of light and sounds. I enjoy reading the details you add, which makes the visual even greater.
Yes, as Aesthe said, Lover of the city, you are.

    The City blushes
from the warmth of the ode,
    knowing its mystique is recognized,
celebrated, being more than just an abode.

Bravo to the Lover of the city!

I live in a small town, but love to go to the city, just to watch the ebb and flow of people, situations, etc. There's a feeling of anonymity , and yet, there's also a feeling of human continuum. You gave this city scene life and vitality.

  • wow great write my friend sounds like a peaceful city all we have in drugs and murder keep doing well my friend
    love your rev papa
